Illinois heads into Saturday’s matchup with Purdue trying to steady itself after a 42-19 loss at Ohio State, while the Boilermakers come in off a 49-10 defeat to Notre Dame. The game is set for 3:15 p.m.
Saturday on BTN, with streaming available on FOXSportsGO. Illinois is listed as a 9.5-point favorite, and the over/under is 59.5.
The Illini are 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play under sixth-year head coach Bret Bielema. Purdue is 1-3 overall and also 0-1 in the conference under second-year coach Barry Odom.
The two programs met on Oct. 4, 2025, and Illinois walked out of West Lafayette with a 43-27 win in a game that featured plenty of offense and a lively visiting crowd. Orange shirts filled Ross-Ade Stadium as Illinois fans made the short 90-mile trip and watched Luke Altmyer turn in one of the best passing performances of his Illinois career.
Altmyer completed 3 of 4 passes? No - the source says he had only three incompletions and finished with a career-high 390 passing yards and a touchdown. He found senior receiver Hank Beatty over and over, with Beatty appearing open each time the ball came his way.
Illinois also leaned on its backfield tandem. Kaden Feagin and Ca’Lil Valentine combined for more than 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns, giving the Illini a steady 1-2 punch on the ground.
The Illinois defense had a rougher time. Missed tackles continued to show up, and the absence of All Big-Ten cornerback Xavier Scott remained a major issue for the secondary. Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne was under heavy pressure from the Illini defensive line, but he still found some success through the air after throwing more than 50 passes.
Even so, Illinois controlled the biggest moments by creating turnovers. Two forced fumbles flipped momentum on separate occasions and led directly to 10 points, helping the Illini pull away in the 43-27 result.
Purdue still leads the all-time series 48-47-6.

Bret Bielema Just Sent A Clear Message About Illinois Football
Bret Bielemas latest move says plenty about where Illinois football stands after another stretch of uneven defensive play. The Illini have been trying to build a tougher, more dependable identity under Bielema, but the defense has been hit hard when facing the Big Tens best offenses, and that pressure has now led to a change on the staff with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck.
For Illinois, the timing matters as much as the decision itself. Bielema has worked to establish a winning culture in Champaign, and part of that process is admitting when something is not holding up against conference opponents. The coaching change puts the focus back on whether the Illini can steady the defense quickly enough to keep the program moving forward. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Is Running Out Of Time To Land A 2027 Guard
Illinois has spent real energy trying to get ahead of the 2027 class, with the staff zeroing in on guards as it looks to build out the next wave of the roster. But one of the names that had fit that search, five-star combo guard King Gibson, trimmed his list to Louisville, Arkansas, LSU and Providence, leaving Illinois on the outside looking in and narrowing an already tricky path.
For a program that wants to keep stockpiling perimeter talent, the timing matters because the board is starting to shrink. The Illini can still hunt for a lesser-known guard, lean on the transfer portal if needed, or keep an eye on 2028 prospect Brady Pettigrew if he reclassifies, but the cleanest long-term answer at lead guard is getting harder to find by the day. Illinois Gets A Huge Shot With Elite Guard This Weekend
Illinois is set to spend the weekend making a strong impression on one of the most coveted young guards in the country. Brady Pettigrew will be on campus for an official visit, giving the program a chance to show off its vision to a player already drawing national attention as the No. 18 overall prospect and the top combo guard in the Class of 2028 by 247Sports.
Pettigrews rsum already looks like that of a recruit with no shortage of options, with more than 30 Division I offers and experience in Team USA minicamps and training camps. He has also taken multiple official visits elsewhere, so this trip gives Illinois a real opportunity to get into a race that figures to stay crowded for a while. [Read more 🡒]
