The defense is the bigger question, and that’s putting it mildly. Against an Ohio State offense this explosive, Illinois may not need perfection so much as damage control. Keeping the Buckeyes under 40 points would probably have to count as a win in some form.
If the Illini can string together a few stops and avoid getting buried, that alone could help steady a defense that has already raised plenty of concerns. At this point, any performance that leaves the group looking more stable than frantic would go a long way toward calming the noise around this early-season start.
