The eligibility mess around college football keeps spinning, and Illinois head coach Bret Bielema has now weighed in with two names he’d welcome back if the legal chaos sends more players back onto rosters.
The latest wrinkle came last month, when U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney of Denver, Colorado, granted a class-wide preliminary injunction requiring the NCAA to grant another year of eligibility to the high school class of 2022. That ruling opened the door for players who had already used all four years to come back for a fifth season, but it did not let them jump into the transfer portal to find a new school.
Then things got even stranger. On Wednesday, a judge in Louisiana reportedly granted a temporary restraining order for 16 former collegiate athletes, giving them the chance to enter the transfer portal in search of that fifth year.
The NCAA also picked up a court win of its own, landing a stay that took away fifth-year protection for the class of 2022. According to Yahoo Sports, the players involved in the Louisiana case will not be affected by that ruling.
Against that backdrop, Bielema addressed the situation and pointed to two graduated seniors he’d like to see back with the Illini: Melvin Priestly and Hank Beatty.

For Illinois, those two would fit cleanly. Priestly would help stabilize an offensive line that has already been reshaped, while Beatty would step into the spot left open by the injured Alex Perry at wide receiver.
Both players also bring something that can’t be manufactured overnight: familiarity. They already know the system, and they’d give the younger players a pair of veterans to lean on during a rebuilding season.
Still, the bigger issue remains the same. The rules are shifting constantly, the timeline is murky, and there’s no clean answer in sight. Bielema’s comments are about Illinois, but they sit inside a much larger mess that college sports still hasn’t figured out how to untangle.
