Illinois may be closer to getting one of its key transfer additions back than it first seemed, and that matters for a team still sorting out both sides of the ball.
Head coach Bret Bielema said Jayshon Platt is making progress, but not enough to get him on the field this week against Southern Illinois. A return for the Big Ten opener against Ohio State also sounds doubtful. The better news is that Week 5 against Purdue at home now looks like a realistic target.
"I don't think Jayshon will be with us this week, or possibly next week, but the week after that we got a chance," Bielema said.

There was also encouraging news on linebacker Daniel Brown. Bielema said Brown could be available Saturday in a limited role, and there’s a strong chance he’s fully back by the time Illinois faces Ohio State. For a defense that needs help stacking stops, that’s a welcome development.
Platt’s absence has been felt, especially because his game brings something Illinois doesn’t currently have enough of. His speed was one of the reasons he arrived with so much buzz, and that speed matters both as a receiver and on kickoff and punt returns. Without him, the offense has leaned more heavily on Collin Dixon and Ca'lil Valentine.
That hasn’t been a disaster for Illinois, with Katin Houser looking comfortable at quarterback. But the attack still feels narrow.
Dixon has been Houser’s top option by a wide margin, catching 17 passes for 236 yards and five touchdowns, which is tied for the national lead. Hudson Clement has filled the WR2 role, but Platt’s return would give the Illini a real vertical threat and stretch the field in a way they don’t currently have.
That kind of help would matter even more if the defense continues to struggle. Illinois has been able to move the ball, but the more explosive the offense becomes, the better chance it has to offset those issues.
For now, though, it looks like the Dixon show will keep rolling until Platt is ready to go.
