February has been a rollercoaster for the Illinois basketball program. The Illini kicked off the month riding high on a 10-game winning streak, which they extended to 12 before things took a turn.
The trouble began on February 7 with back-to-back overtime losses, putting a dent in their hopes for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. However, a couple of wins against lesser teams helped steady the ship.
A tough loss to UCLA was a wake-up call. But with a game against No.
3 Michigan looming, there was still hope for redemption. Unfortunately, Illinois fell short, suffering a 14-point defeat and marking their fourth loss in six games.
Despite the recent struggles, Illinois remains in a strong position for the NCAA tournament. Joe Lunardi's latest projections still have the Illini as a No. 2 seed, albeit the last one in that category.
It's surprising to see Illinois maintain this seeding despite the recent slump. If the tournament started today, teams like Houston or Kansas might leapfrog them, dropping Illinois to a No. 3 seed.
But for now, they find themselves in a hypothetical bracket with No. 1 Duke, No.
3 Houston, and No. 4 Texas Tech.
Illinois has already bested the Red Raiders this season, but Duke and Houston have historically posed challenges.
To secure their favorable seeding, Illinois needs a strong finish. Upcoming games against Oregon and Maryland are crucial. Winning both would put them at 24-7 overall and 15-5 in the Big Ten.
A solid performance in the Big Ten Tournament is also essential. As a top-four seed, Illinois will enjoy a triple-bye, likely facing Purdue in their first game. A victory there would help cement their No. 2 seed status in the NCAA tournament.
