Brutal Alex Bregman Problem Could End Cubs Season

Craig Counsell faces a challenging lineup dilemma as Alex Bregman's recovery and limited role impact the Brewers' Wild Card strategy.

Alex Bregman’s return has given the Cubs a boost, but it has also put Craig Counsell in a lineup bind at the worst possible time.

Bregman is back in games less than two weeks after taking a foul ball to the face and suffering multiple facial fractures, which is remarkable on its own. The catch is that he is not fully available in the way the Cubs would prefer. In Game 1 of their loss to the San Diego Padres, he was used as the designated hitter, and that choice traces back to how comfortable the team is with him handling third base.

When Bregman is healthy, he is one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. Right now, though, keeping him at DH is the safer move while he works through the facial injuries. That decision has ripple effects everywhere else on the roster.

The biggest one comes at third base, where Pedro Ramirez has been one of the Cubs’ more encouraging developments this season. The bat has shown up at times, but right-handed pitching has given him trouble. Against righties this year, Ramirez is hitting .237/.298/.364 with a wRC+ of 82.

Counsell does not have an obvious fix sitting nearby either. Matt Shaw has also had a rough time against right-handed pitching, posting a wRC+ of 79 in 90 plate appearances this season.

Bregman at DH has also squeezed Michael Conforto out of the lineup. Conforto has been used almost entirely against right-handed pitchers this season, with 302 plate appearances against righties and only 11 against lefties. In those plate appearances against right-handers, he put up a 113 wRC+ and hit 29 extra-base hits.

Conforto probably would not have changed Game 1, which got away from the Cubs quickly. But with Game 2 on deck and right-hander Nick Pivetta on the mound, there is a clear argument for finding a way to get him in there.

That still leaves the same question hanging over Counsell’s lineup card: can he afford to put Bregman back at third base? Bregman was getting work at the position on Monday and said he would be able to play the field if needed. In an elimination game, that may be the move that forces the issue.

Illinois May Have Found The Guard For Shauna Greens Next Era

Illinois basketball has kept a steady eye on the next wave of talent, and its latest scholarship offer went out to Wichita East High School sophomore point guard Jada Davis. The guard is already drawing attention well beyond Kansas, with her national ranking and list of college offers signaling just how early the race for her has begun.

Davis is the kind of prospect who can shape a future backcourt, which is why Illinois is in the conversation now rather than later. For Shauna Green and her staff, the appeal is obvious: a young point guard with the profile to grow into a central piece of the next era, even as the rest of the recruiting battle around her keeps building. Purdue Enters Illinois Rivalry With One Worry Growing Fast

Illinois and Purdue are heading into their matchup with both programs trying to steady themselves after recent losses to top-ranked opponents, and the timing gives the rivalry an added edge. Illinois has already made a notable change on the staff front, mutually parting ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck after the Ohio State loss, a move Bret Bielema addressed as the Illini look to reset and keep their season from sliding further.

Purdue arrives with its own concerns growing quickly after three straight defeats, including the setback against Notre Dame, and the pressure is beginning to show in the way Barry Odom and defensive coordinator Kevin Kane are talking about the teams challenges and adjustments. For Illinois, that makes the Boilermakers a familiar opponent at exactly the wrong moment, with both sides needing answers and neither looking especially settled right now. [Read more 🡒]

Illinois Fans Just Got An Early Read On Two Big Questions

Fall practice is underway for Illinois mens basketball, and even this early in the 2026-27 buildup, there are already a couple of roster storylines that matter. Fans have gotten a first look at the group in action, which is always useful when a team is trying to sort out who is ready to help, who still needs time and how the new pieces might fit around the returning core.

Sophomore David Mirkovic remains on the sideline while he recovers from foot surgery, so his availability is still a question as the team works through the opening stages of camp. Meanwhile, newcomer Stefan Vaaks has flashed the kind of playmaking and shooting that can change the feel of a backcourt, and freshmen Quentin Coleman and Lincoln Williams have shown enough athleticism to put themselves in the mix for meaningful minutes once the real evaluations begin.
