The Yankees are heading into the Wild Card round without Aaron Judge.
Manager Aaron Boone told reporters Tuesday, before the doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays, that the club is not planning on having Judge active for the opening playoff series. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported Boone’s update, which points to a return only in the ALDS or later, if Judge comes back at all.
"We're not planning on him being a part of that," Boone told Kirschner and reporters about Judge's availability for the AL Wild Card.
That’s a harsh blow for New York, especially with the Wild Card opponent most likely to be the Boston Red Sox. The Tampa Bay Rays are on the verge of winning the AL East, and the third Wild Card spot sits well behind both the Yankees and Red Sox, making a Yankees-Red Sox series the likely setup.
Judge’s latest setback comes after he already missed significant time earlier in the 2026 season, sitting out from the start of June until late August. He returned, but the comeback was brief before a calf strain sent him back to the injured list.
The Yankees will at least get Jazz Chisholm Jr. back, and they’re also expected to have the likely Cy Young winner on the mound in Cam Schlittler. Even so, they’ll be entering the first playoff series of the year without their best player.
Boone’s update makes it clear Judge is out for the Wild Card round, and what happens after that remains uncertain. He didn’t look fully settled in his first return from the IL, and now another injury is pushing his status deeper into doubt.
For now, the Yankees appear headed into October with a major hole in the middle of the lineup and no guarantee Aaron Judge will be available anytime soon.
