Brad Underwood Just Spotlighted An Illinois Player Fans Might Be Undervaluing

Coach Brad Underwood declares Jake Davis a key asset to Illinois Basketball, citing his exceptional shooting and leadership that transcend basic stat lines.

Brad Underwood didn’t waste much time making the case for Jake Davis at Big Ten media day. The Illinois coach called him “a championship-level role player” and “invaluable to our team,” and the reasons go well beyond the box score.

“He’s an incredible leader. He’s capable of scoring 20 [points] in a half, because he does everything we ask him to do - but he doesn’t need the ball. And yet he creates great space with his shooting.

“He’s very cerebral, very, very smart. And stays, sometimes, for lack of better terms, stays out of great players’ way.

And there’s an art to that. And yet, if you help and support off him, he’s going to make it.

He’s invaluable to our team. His leadership.

His work ethic. He’s a keeper of our culture, which is really important.

Of huge value to our group.”

That kind of description fits a player whose production has never needed to scream to be heard. Davis posted 5.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in 19.6 minutes during the 2025-26 season, while shooting 40.6 percent from three and starting 22 games. Those aren’t eye-popping numbers, but they don’t tell the full story of what Illinois gets from him.

The analytics crowd may not have been especially loud in his corner either. EvanMiya ranked Davis No. 482 nationally in 2025-26, last among eligible Illinois players. Still, the gap between that number and his actual value to the Illini is exactly the point: Davis impacts winning in ways that don’t show up neatly in a ranking.

What Underwood keeps returning to is the same set of traits - shooting, intelligence, leadership, work ethic - and the way Davis fits around high-end talent without fading into the background. “For lack of better terms, stays out of great players’ way,” Underwood said.

That’s not a backhanded compliment. It’s the blueprint for an elite role player.

Davis has already lived that role at a high level. Two years after arriving in Champaign from a Mercer team that went 9.0 points per game from him as a freshman, he was starting in a Final Four game. Now he looks set to do it again in 2026-27, as the most experienced and savvy seventh-man in the nation.

Illinois will have plenty of attention on David Mirkovic, Quentin Coleman and the rest of its top-end talent. But Davis is the kind of player who quietly keeps the whole operation moving. That’s the job, and he does it well enough that Underwood is calling him a keeper of the program’s culture.

Illinois Suddenly Has A Bigger QB Question After Michigan State Win

Illinois came out of its overtime win at Michigan State with a lot to feel good about, but the biggest development may have come at quarterback. Katin Houser left the game with a left hand injury, and freshman Michael Clayton II stepped in and helped steady the offense when it mattered most.

Clayton completed 6 of 8 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, and his performance was enough to push Illinois to a 38-37 finish in overtime. It also put the spotlight squarely on what happens next, because the Illini suddenly have to sort out a quarterback situation that looked a lot more settled before Houser went down. [Read more 🡒]

Illinois Practice Clips Just Sparked A Real Rotation Debate

Illinois basketballs social media team put out a practice reel that did more than fill a quiet stretch on the calendar. The clips offered a quick look at a roster with plenty of new faces and overlapping skill sets, and they naturally invited questions about how the pieces might fit when the games start counting. Stefan Vaaks, Jason Jakstys, Quentin Coleman, Lincoln Williams, Andrej Stojakovic, Lucas Morillo, Tomislav Ivisic and Ethan Brown all flashed in their own way, giving a glimpse of the depth the Illini are trying to sort through.

For a staff that will have to balance development with immediate production, those short practice windows can mean a lot more than they seem. The video did not answer every question, of course, but it did underline why the rotation conversation feels so open right now: there are multiple players with tools that could push for minutes, and the way Illinois chooses to deploy them may say as much about the season ahead as any preseason projection. Sydney Brown Is Giving Illinois Fans A Real NFL Story To Watch

Sydney Browns move from Philadelphia to Atlanta has quietly turned into one of the more interesting NFL stories for Illinois fans to track. After the Falcons acquired the safety in a trade involving draft pick swaps, Brown has found a more active role on defense than he had with the Eagles, giving him a chance to show the kind of impact that made him such a notable name coming out of Champaign.

Through five games this season, Brown has already logged 20 tackles, forced a fumble and broken up a pass, a steady start that matters even more as Atlanta begins thinking about its secondary beyond this year. With some safeties heading toward free agency after the season, Browns play could help determine not only how much he sticks in the Falcons plans, but also where his next NFL opportunity lands.
