CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Brad Underwood didn’t spend much time staying on the topic of the new Busey Bank patches when he met with reporters. Once the Illinois men’s basketball coach opened the door, the conversation quickly shifted to something he sounded far more eager to discuss: how his team’s summer has gone.
“It’s been really good; I’m excited,” Underwood said.
A big part of that enthusiasm comes from the freshmen in the program. Illinois’ 2026 class includes six players: guards Quentin Coleman, Lucas Morillo, Ethan Brown, Lincoln Williams and forwards Zavier Zens and Landon Davis. The group is ranked No. 6 nationally by 247Sports, and Underwood said the newcomers have handled the summer work well.
“They’re smart, their retention has been really high,” Underwood said. “I don’t feel like we’ve lost anybody, and it’s been a big summer of install, as we call it, where we install new things offensively and defensively.”
For Underwood, another major plus has been finally seeing more of the roster together at once. Senior guard Andrej Stojakovic is back after an injury, and sophomore Stefan Vaaks has been working his way back in after spending time with the Estonian men’s national team.
That kind of continuity matters to Underwood, who said having everyone available gives him a much clearer picture of what Illinois might look like down the line.
“It just allows you to get a vision, a picture of what it might look like… I don’t want to be like how I was last year, where it took me till after the UConn game to figure out Keaton [Wagler] on the ball and that [David Mirkovic] Mirk wasn’t a center,” Underwood said.
The 2026-27 season is still months away, but Underwood already sounds like a coach trying to get ahead of the next round of lineup decisions. After last summer left him short on bodies, this one has given him a better chance to sort through pieces early.
“I want to figure that out… it was a challenge last year because we didn’t have a lot of the guys in the summer, so it’s been very helpful,” Underwood said.

He has to prove he can handle the physical side of the Big Ten while still letting that jumper play, and the fit in Underwoods system could determine how fast he goes from promising freshman to one of the leagues more interesting breakout candidates.
