Illinois fans got a jolt of what’s coming next when Bennett Konkey lit up Geneva’s season opener with a start that turned heads fast.
The four-star wide receiver, a class of 2027 commit and one of Illinois’ top two recruits for next season, is entering his final year at Geneva High School. He already looks like a major piece for a program that is expected to lose five receivers by the end of the season.
Konkey’s debut Friday night only added to the buzz. Geneva jumped out early on Libertyville thanks to three first-quarter touchdowns from the Illinois commit, and he touched every corner of the field while doing it. He opened with a 100-yard kickoff return for a score, then added a 70-yard strike down the middle before finishing another drive with a 49-yard screen pass down the sideline.
By the time the first quarter ended, Konkey had accounted for 18 of Geneva’s 28 points against Libertyville.
The Vikings’ fast start set the tone in a game they controlled early, and Konkey was the clear engine behind it. He’ll get another chance to keep rolling in Week 2 when Geneva hosts Oswego, which is coming off a 44-22 win over Neuqua Valley.
The appeal for Illinois goes beyond one electric night. Konkey is also a track-and-field standout, and his speed is the kind that changes how defenses have to line up. He reportedly runs a sub-11.00 100m and a 4.43 40-yard dash, which gives him the kind of burst that can blow the top off a defense in a hurry.
That skill set fits neatly into Illinois’ offense. Konkey has experience working both in the slot and outside, and that versatility gives him a real path to making an impact in Barry Lunney’s scheme. In the slot, he could develop into the kind of reliable pass-catcher Bret Bielema can feature, much like Hank Beatty last season.
