The Houston Texans have turned to a familiar name to help patch the linebacker room after Henry To'oTo'o's shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve.
According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Houston signed Jamal Hill from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The move comes after DeMeco Ryans signaled on Monday that To'oTo'o would be out for a stretch following the Texans’ Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills, and Wilson reported the veteran starter is expected to miss about two months.
That timeline puts To'oTo'o out at least through Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and probably beyond that. With that in mind, the Texans chose to bring up someone who already knows the building, the system and the expectations.
Hill is heading into his fourth pro season and has been with Houston since being selected on day three of the 2024 NFL Draft. Listed at 6-foot and 227 pounds, he came into the league as a safety before moving to linebacker, and he has spent the last two years as a depth piece for the Texans.
His résumé in Houston has been built mostly on special teams work. Hill has appeared in 20 games since 2024, with 10 combined tackles and one forced fumble. Over the last two seasons, he’s logged more than 350 special teams snaps, and his role grew significantly last year, when his regular-season snap count jumped from 126 to 239.
He was in the mix for the Texans’ initial 53-man roster during training camp and preseason, but Houston’s linebacker depth pushed him to the practice squad instead. Now he’s back on the main roster, and this time it’s more than a short-term elevation. Hill is one of the 53 players, at least for now, and can be activated any week.
That doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to stay there. Once To'oTo'o is healthy, Hill could slide back to the practice squad depending on how things unfold. For the moment, though, he gives Houston another body at linebacker while the starter recovers.
His most likely role remains on special teams, where he played 75% of the Texans’ snaps in the games he was active for. As for the opening in the starting defense, veteran Jake Hansen looks like the front-runner after playing seven defensive snaps last week, though fourth-round rookie Wade Woodaz is also in the mix after showing well in limited preseason action.
