Kayshon Boutte’s long-rumored exit from New England has finally become reality.
The Patriots have agreed to send the wide receiver to Houston in a trade that brings safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick back to New England, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The report was shared through The Ringer and Netflix Sports.
For the Texans, the timing makes sense. Their receiver room took a major hit when second-year wideout Jayden Higgins tore his ACL during a joint practice with the Raiders last week, ending his season before it ever got started. That left Houston leaning even more heavily on Nico Collins, and the team responded by signing veterans Sterling Shepard and Robert Woods for short-term help while still looking for another move.
Boutte gives Houston a different kind of answer. He’s younger, faster and more explosive than the veteran stopgaps, and he comes off a season in which he caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 16.7 yards per catch and was one of Drake Maye’s best deep threats.
There’s also a familiar connection behind the scenes. Texans general manager Nick Caserio spent time in New England’s front office, which helped make the match a natural one once discussions picked up.
In New England, the decision came down to numbers. The Patriots added A.J.
Brown and Romeo Doubs this offseason, which pushed Boutte further down the depth chart even after his strong 2025 production. Boutte had already asked for a trade, though he told reporters this summer that he wanted to remain with the team.
“I want to be in New England for the rest of my career, I would say,” he said in July. “I enjoy it out here.
Been here three years. This is my new home.”
The Patriots had reportedly been holding out for a significant return, with earlier reports saying they wanted a third-round pick before eventually settling on this package. Reed now gives them a safety addition they’ve been keeping tabs on throughout camp.
Both teams are working against the clock, with their seasons set to begin in less than three weeks. Houston gets a chance to fold Boutte into its offense before Week 1, while New England turns to sorting out the rest of its receiver rotation behind Brown and Doubs.
