The Houston Texans have added another body to their defensive line, bringing in former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Derek Parish as free agency continues to reshape the edge-rusher room.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the agreement, noting: “Former Jaguars 2023 sixth-round pick and UFL edge rusher Derick Parish reached agreement today with the Houston Texans.”
Parish’s path to Houston has taken plenty of turns. He spent five seasons at the University of Houston from 2017 to 2022, then moved on to the professional ranks with Jacksonville after being selected 240th overall in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
He has still not appeared in an NFL game. Since then, he’s spent time in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts and most recently played in the UFL with the DC Defenders during the 2026 season.
Now the 6-foot-1, 27-year-old is back in Houston, where he also attended Pearland High School in Pearland, Texas. The Texans will add him to the 90-man roster, and he could have a chance to get into uniform before the team’s third and final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday.
Parish brings some recent game production with him from the UFL. In 10 games with the Defenders, he recorded 23 total tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. He also played in two postseason games and finished with three tackles.
Houston’s need on the edge has become more obvious in recent days. Jadeveon Clowney is dealing with a lower leg injury, Dominique Robinson is working back from a calf injury suffered after the Texans’ last preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, and fourth-year edge rusher Dylan Horton reportedly tore his Achilles and will miss the entire 2026 season.
That has left the Texans looking for depth, even if only to get through the preseason before roster cuts this weekend. Parish is the latest addition, and his unusual route through college, the CFL and the UFL gives him a different kind of shot than most of the names fighting for a spot.
With Houston’s defensive end depth chart now open beyond its top three names, Parish at least has a lane to make some noise. He does not have much time, though: the Texans must cut down to 53 players on Sunday. If he can flash in practice and in the preseason, a practice squad spot could still be in play.
