The Texans’ linebacker room took another hit heading into Week 3, and the latest blow comes with Jake Hummel headed to injured reserve.
Houston announced that Hummel has been placed on IR after dealing with a groin injury that dates back to last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He hadn’t practiced since the start of last week, sitting out six straight team sessions as the issue lingered.
The move guarantees Hummel will miss at least the next four games. That means he’s out for Sunday’s matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, next week’s home game against the Dallas Cowboys, and the two road trips that follow against the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
For a linebacker group already stretched thin, the timing only sharpens the problem. Hummel’s absence puts four Texans linebackers on injured reserve or the PUP list before the team has even played its third game of the season.
E.J. Speed, a veteran linebacker, suffered a long-term quad injury during the offseason that could keep him out for the entire 2026 season.
K.C. Ossai was placed on IR before the season.
Henry To’oTo’o was sent to IR after Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, when he injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter.
Hummel’s loss doesn’t carry the same weight on defense as Speed or To’oTo’o, both of whom are described as weekly pieces when healthy. Hummel has mostly been a special teams contributor and has played just 150 defensive snaps in his career.
Still, it’s another dent in a position group that has already taken plenty of damage. Going into Week 3, the Texans have five linebackers healthy on the 53-man roster.
Jamal Hill is among them after being brought up from the practice squad because of the injuries at the position. The others are Azeez Al-Shaair, Jake Hansen, and rookies Wade Woodaz and Aiden Fisher.
That rookie pair is now in line for more work. Woodaz, who had already been trending toward a bigger role after a productive July and August, looks poised for a heavier workload on both defense and special teams. Fisher should also see his share of snaps rise.
Houston could also choose to make another move by signing a linebacker from the practice squad to the 53-man roster or elevating one for the stretch from Week 4 through Week 6.
For now, Kenneth Murray is the only linebacker left on the Texans’ practice squad after Hill’s promotion. He won’t be available for Sunday’s game against the Colts because Houston has already used its elevations, but he’s a name to keep on the radar in the weeks ahead.
