The Houston Texans could have a running back to watch when the 2027 NFL Draft rolls around, and one recent mock has them landing a big-name possibility in Ole Miss standout Kewan Lacy.
It’s still way too early to lock in any outcome for next April, and that’s really the point of these preseason mock drafts. They’re not built to forecast the exact draft board.
Instead, they shine a light on prospects worth tracking and spots where teams may need help down the line. In Houston’s case, that means the backfield is already being treated as an area to monitor.
The mock points to Lacy as a potential answer for a Texans running back room that could use a jolt. “David Montgomery and Woody Marks should be a solid 1-2 punch for the Houston backfield this season, but Montgomery will be 30 next June, and Marks is may be better suited for a change-of-pace role,” the article said. “Lacy is an explosive runner with home-run ability and the pass-catching skills to be a true featured back on all three downs.”
That’s the appeal with Lacy. He isn’t just a runner who can handle volume; he brings the kind of burst that changes how a defense has to line up.
Last season, he put himself on the national radar with 1,564 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, and the production matched the traits. He has the vertical speed to separate in a hurry and the acceleration to turn a crease into a chunk play before defenders can recover.
What makes him especially dangerous is how he sees the game before the hit comes. Lacy reads defenses well behind the line, shows patience while blocks develop, and then attacks the opening once it appears. From there, it’s the combination of speed and quickness that makes him hard to contain.
He’s also a tough finish for tacklers. Lacy brings power, but he can also make defenders miss, which is why he ranked third in the NCAA with 89 missed tackles forced against PFF in 2025. One play he’ll run through contact; the next, he’ll slip away with a sharp cut and keep moving.
Nothing about this is a certainty yet, and the Texans are still a long way from making any real decision on Lacy. But the fit is easy to see, and if he keeps trending the way he has, he’ll be a name worth circling as the 2027 draft picture comes into focus.
