The Texans are heading into the back half of the season still searching for steadier play up front, and DeMeco Ryans is making it clear that Aireontae Ersery can be part of the answer if he brings a little more edge to every snap.
Ryans said the second-year offensive tackle has already shown he can help Houston on the outside, especially in pass protection. But the message coming out of the bye week was about raising the standard from play to play.
“Tae has done some good things for us, protected on the edge,” Ryans said. He added that the young tackle needs a more consistent “relentless motor” and must finish his assignments through the whistle.
That challenge comes with Houston sitting at 2-5, second in the AFC South behind the Jacksonville Jaguars at 5-2. The Texans are still alive in the division race, and better work from the offensive line would go a long way toward helping them find some traction.
Ersery has been on the field for every game this season, starting all seven contests and logging 458 offensive snaps at right tackle. The numbers show both the promise and the problem. He has a 57.8 overall grade from PFF and a 66.7 pass-blocking grade, but he has also given up 22 pressures, including four sacks.
That’s why the coaching staff is pressing for more consistency now, not later. Houston is entering a crucial stretch, and the offense needs cleaner protection if it’s going to settle in and build any rhythm.

Ryans said the challenge for Ersery moving forward is to play with a more consistent “relentless motor” and finish through the whistle.

For Ersery, the second half is a chance to turn that coaching push into real progress. If he can keep his effort level high and finish the job on each snap, he could become a more dependable piece of the Texans’ front.

C.J. Strouds Next Texans Contract Could Get Very Complicated
C.J. Strouds next Texans contract has already become one of the more interesting storylines around the team, even before any deal is signed. Houston has put forward an offer that would push past $50 million in new money, but the sides still have not landed on an agreement, and the backdrop is a third season that has not matched the standard Stroud set early in his career.
The timing matters because Bryce Young is moving toward a second deal of his own, one that is also expected to clear $50 million per year. Both quarterbacks from the 2023 draft remain under rookie contracts through the 2027 season after their fifth-year options were exercised, but they are eligible for new deals now, which gives Houston a tricky negotiation to navigate as the market around young franchise passers keeps climbing. Texans Make A Familiar D-Line Move With Bigger Stakes Than It Seems
After their Week 8 bye, the Texans turned to a familiar face to shore up the middle of their defense, signing veteran defensive tackle Naquan Jones to the active roster. Houston waived Jaden Crumedy to make room, and the move brings Jones back into a system he already knows from his time with the team last season under DeMeco Ryans.
It is the kind of transaction that can look routine on the surface, but for a team trying to hold up over the second half of the season, interior depth matters. Jones gives Houston another experienced body inside, and the Texans are clearly betting that familiarity with the scheme can help him settle in quickly if his number is called. [Read more 🡒]
Texans Return From Bye Facing A Season Defining Stretch
The bye week gave Houston a chance to reset, but the calendar is about to get unforgiving. The Texans are still chasing Jacksonville in the division and sitting outside the AFC playoff picture, which leaves little margin for error as November opens and the schedule starts tilting toward the road.
Three home division games still remain, and that gives Houston a path back into the race if it can stack wins in a hurry. A strong month, ideally 3-1 or better, would keep the season alive, and the upcoming meeting with the Chargers arrives just before the trade deadline, adding another layer of importance to a game that could shape both the standings and whatever moves the front office considers next.
