The Panthers got a harsh reminder of what a real pass rush can do on Wednesday, and Dave Canales didn’t sound interested in running from it.
In a joint practice with the Texans, Houston’s front made life miserable for Bryce Young and the Carolina offense. Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter were in the backfield so often that they would have piled up multiple sacks if quarterbacks had been live. Instead, the pressure still showed up in other ways, forcing Young into a couple of interceptions and putting the spotlight squarely on tackles Rasheed Walker and Monroe Freeling.
That’s not a small detail for Carolina. Walker and Freeling are the men lined up to replace the injured Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton when the season starts, so Wednesday offered a very clear look at where the Panthers stand.
Canales, though, framed the session as useful rather than discouraging.
“That’s exactly what we need to see,” Canales said, via the team’s website. “Monroe needs it.
Rasheed needs it. When we dropped back today, we did little beyond Bryce extending and getting a couple of plays going.
The rush was phenomenal. And that’s exactly the information we need to be able to regroup.”
Young acknowledged how rough it felt in the moment, saying it “sucks in the moment,” but he also echoed the idea that the Panthers can take something from the day by adding, “we’re only going to be better from a day like this.”
Of course, rough days in August don’t always stay contained to August. They can be a warning sign too. For now, Carolina has time to sort through the protection issues before the hits start counting for real.
