Texans Now Face A New Chargers Wrinkle In Week 9

With an 0-7 start and offensive play struggles plaguing the Chargers, strategic changes aim to breathe new life into their game against the Texans.

The Chargers are trying something different as they head into Week 9 against the Texans: offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is moving upstairs.

McDaniel said Thursday that he will leave the sideline and call plays from the coaches’ booth on Sunday, a shift he believes could give him a clearer look at what’s happening on the field and help him communicate more effectively with the rest of the staff.

“One of the things I want to try is call plays from the box to see adjustments for myself and communicate with the position coaches appropriately what things we can focus on between series,” McDaniel said. “I won’t be in the same spot.”

He also told reporters, “I think we’re going to try that this week. Seems like a good action to take based on how things have gone this year.”

The move comes after a brutal start for Los Angeles. The Chargers are 0-7, and the offense has been stuck in the mud for weeks. They’ve gone nine straight quarters and 27 possessions without a touchdown, a stretch that has only intensified the pressure on the coaching staff.

Last week didn’t do much to calm things down. In a 24-9 loss to the Rams in Week 8, the Chargers managed only three field goals and again came up empty when it mattered most.

The bigger picture is even harsher. Through seven games, Los Angeles sits last in the NFL in scoring with 99 points and has also turned the ball over an NFL-high 17 times.

Even with the changes, McDaniel will remain the team’s play-caller. Jim Harbaugh has already made it clear he doesn’t plan to fire his offensive coordinator, sticking with him despite the rough start.

So the adjustment is a modest one, but the Chargers are hoping it helps. With Houston up next and the offense still searching for a spark, Sunday is another chance to see whether a new vantage point can lead to better results.

Texans Face A Jadeveon Clowney Decision Fans Wont Ignore

As the NFL trade deadline draws closer, Jadeveon Clowney has become one of the more intriguing names on Houstons roster. The veteran edge rusher has drawn trade interest, and the Texans are weighing whether to keep a proven presence on the field or turn that value into future draft capital as they continue shaping the roster for the long term.

Clowneys reported comfort with the idea of landing with a contending team only adds another layer to the conversation, even though nothing has been finalized. For Houston, the decision is less about sentiment than timing and direction, and with no official move announced yet, the uncertainty around his future is now part of the deadline picture. Texans Trade Deadline Focus Is Zeroing In On Two Trouble Spots

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Texans appear to be doing their homework on two areas that have become hard to ignore: running back and safety. Albert Breer reported Houston has interest in adding help at both spots, a sign the front office is looking at the roster through a practical lens after injuries and uneven play have thinned out the depth chart.

Houston has until Nov. 10 to make any moves, and the next stretch will tell whether those talks turn into something more concrete. For a team trying to steady itself in the middle of the season, the appeal is obvious, because upgrades at either position could help patch over problems that have already shown up on the field. Jaguars Face A Brian Thomas Jr. Debate Fans Never Expected

The AFC South has a way of turning one teams uncertainty into everyone elses problem, and this latest round of noise is no different. Anthony Richardson was back on the field for 14 snaps in Week 8 after recovering from an eye injury, and his gratitude for being able to see well enough to play was a reminder of how fragile the quarterback picture can get. At the same time, reports around the division have Colts wideout Josh Downs asking out, with the Chiefs and Steelers said to be interested, while some executives are skeptical Indianapolis would even land a third-round pick.

For Houston, the more immediate concern is the ripple effect in Jacksonville, where speculation has started to swirl around Brian Thomas Jr. and what the Jaguars might do next. The Texans have their own issues to sort through, with coaches and executives pointing to execution rather than scheme as the reason for the defensive struggles, but any movement in the divisions pass-catching market would matter. If Jacksonville really entertains the idea, it would add another layer of intrigue to a race that already feels unsettled. [Read more 🡒]
