The Texans are heading into a crucial stretch of the season with a growing list of injury concerns, and Thursday’s practice report didn’t offer much relief.
Wide receiver Nico Collins was notably absent for the second straight day, but he wasn’t alone. Veteran right tackle Trent Brown also missed his second consecutive practice.
Brown played every snap in last weekend’s win over the Steelers, so his absence this week-due to an ankle injury-is something to monitor closely. For a team that relies heavily on its offensive line to give the quarterback time and open up the run game, Brown’s availability could be a key factor heading into Sunday.
On the defensive side, lineman Denico Autry remained out with a knee issue. He’s a versatile piece up front, and his absence-along with wide receiver Justin Watson, who’s still in concussion protocol-leaves the Texans thin at a couple of important spots. Both players also sat out Wednesday’s session, so their status is trending in the wrong direction as the week progresses.
There’s a sizable group of players still working through injuries in a limited capacity. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (knee), rookie corner Kamari Lassiter (ankle, knee), and defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (elbow) were all limited again.
On offense, linemen Tytus Howard (ankle) and Ed Ingram (shoulder), along with running back Jawhar Jordan (ankle), also remained limited. While being on the field in any capacity is a positive sign, the Texans will need to see progress from these players before feeling confident about their availability.
There was at least some good news: safety Jaylen Reed (knee), long snapper Austin Brinkman (knee), and left tackle Aireontae Ersery (thumb) all practiced fully. That’s especially encouraging for Ersery, who anchors the left side of the line and plays a key role in both pass protection and run blocking.
As the Texans prepare for their next matchup, the injury report is shaping up to be a major storyline. With multiple starters either sidelined or limited, depth and next-man-up readiness will be tested.
