The Texans are set to open their 2026 season against the Buffalo Bills, and Houston has already settled on the four players who will wear the captain’s patch.
The group is a familiar one in a lot of ways, but there are still a couple of notable changes from last season. The Texans announced that QB C.J.
Stroud, DE Will Anderson, LB Azeez Al-Shaair and DB Jalen Pitre will serve as captains for 2026. That’s one fewer captain than Houston had going into last year.
Pitre is the new face in the group. He takes the place of wide receiver Nico Collins, who was among the five players wearing a captain’s patch this time last year. Collins is now the only player still on the roster from that group who did not land back in the captaincy for a second straight season.
There’s also the matter of Dare Ogunbowale, who is no longer in the mix after spending the past three seasons in Houston. He is currently in free agency after being cut by the Las Vegas Raiders following training camp.
The Texans’ choices reflect the kind of locker room DeMeco Ryans has built since taking over as head coach in 2023. Houston has made a point of stocking the roster with players who have led before, and that showed again this offseason.
The Texans signed Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship, one of the more notable additions, and they also drafted a group with plenty of leadership experience. Half of Houston’s eight draft picks served as team captains in college.
That’s part of what makes the captain’s designation meaningful in Houston. This isn’t a casual nod. It signals a player has already earned real trust inside a roster that Ryans and the Texans have worked to shape around their “S.W.A.R.M." culture.
This year’s group also leans heavily toward defensive leadership and experience. Each of the four captains has been with the Texans for at least three seasons, and Pitre is the longest-tenured of the bunch as he heads into his fifth year with the team.
Houston’s first game with its new captains will come Sunday, September 13th, when the Texans face the Bills at 12 p.m. CT.

A week after a rookie wideout injury thinned out the receiver room, the Texans went looking for another option with some upside and landed Kayshon Boutte from New England. Houston sent safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Patriots, a modest price for a player who once looked like a strong secondary piece but now gets a chance to reboot his career in a situation that could be a better fit.
Boutte, the former LSU standout, said he wanted a bigger role as he plays through a contract year, and the move also brings him closer to home. Texans Still Searching For Secondary Depth Right Before Week 1
With Week 1 against the Bills looming, the Texans are still taking a hard look at the back end of their roster. Houston brought in six free agent defensive backs for workouts, a familiar late-summer move as teams try to make sure they have enough bodies and enough options before the games start to count.
Natrone Brooks, Jaden Davis, Aaron Graves, Dan Jackson, Anthony Johnson and Sanoussi Kane all went through the process, and no signing has been reported yet. Jaylin Noel Is Suddenly In A Bigger Texans Role Than Expected
With injuries thinning the receiver room, Jaylin Noel has moved from promising second-year piece to a player the Texans may need to lean on right away. The former slot option has picked up added work as both a key inside target and a punt returner as Houston gets ready for its Week 1 meeting with the Bills, a shift that gives the offense and special teams another layer of importance entering the season.
DeMeco Ryans has already pointed to Noels growth at the F receiver spot, a sign the staff trusts him to handle more than just fill-in snaps.
