The Houston Texans were ready to get aggressive with C.J. Stroud, but the quarterback passed on the kind of extension that would have put him near the top of the league’s pay scale.
According to the report, Houston spent the spring and summer in productive talks with Stroud’s camp and put a proposal on the table that would have paid him more than $50 million per year. That kind of number would have pushed him into the NFL’s upper tier of quarterback contracts. Stroud, though, declined the offer.
The reason is simple enough: the market keeps climbing. The top quarterbacks now make between $60 million and $70 million a year, and Stroud and his agent appear to be betting that waiting will only make the price go up.
Houston, for its part, still has plenty of control. Stroud is only entering the fourth year of his rookie deal, and the Texans have already picked up his fully guaranteed fifth-year option for 2027. That means the team keeps his rights for the next two seasons even without a new extension.
There’s also the football side of the equation. Stroud’s first season was electric, but his 2025 year included late-season regression and injuries.
He also had a rough playoff exit against New England, throwing four interceptions. Waiting another year gives the Texans more time to judge where he truly stands before committing to a deal that could top $250 million.
Nick Caserio has also drawn a line in the sand. He set a Week 1 deadline, saying that if a contract wasn’t done before the regular-season opener against Buffalo, negotiations would be put on hold.
