The Houston Texans made a small but telling roster move after adding wide receiver Montrell Washington, waiving defensive lineman Junior Tafuna to clear space.
Tafuna’s exit comes after a short stay in Houston. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound lineman signed a futures contract earlier this offseason, which gave the Texans his rights and put him on the 90-man roster. He had been with the team since January and spent time through OTAs, minicamp, and the start of training camp, but he’s now the odd man out with the official cutdown day still a few weeks away at the end of August.
A four-year player out of Utah, Tafuna has not recorded an NFL stat and entered the league as an undrafted free agent from the 2025 NFL Draft.
The move also hints at where Houston feels comfortable on the defensive interior. The Texans currently have seven players listed as defensive tackles on the latest 90-man roster, and several of them appear positioned to stick. Tommy Togiai, Kayden McDonald, and Sheldon Rankins are among the names that stand out as virtual locks for the 53-man roster.
There are also a couple of deeper options in the mix, including Naquan Jones, whom Houston signed at the end of the 2025 season, and Kyonte Hamilton, a day three pick for the Texans in the 2024 draft.
Mario Edwards adds another layer to that group. He’s back in the fold after signing a new contract earlier in training camp, following a release with a failed physical designation earlier this offseason. That gives Edwards a path to reclaim his spot as a depth piece along the Texans’ defensive front, and he could climb ahead of Jones and Hamilton in the battle for the 53-man roster.
With that kind of depth already in place, Tafuna became expendable once Houston brought Edwards back and added more competition at wide receiver and on special teams with Washington.
So the Texans move on: Washington joins the roster, Tafuna is waived, and the competition keeps tightening as August rolls on.
