The Houston Texans will head into Week 9 short on just two starters, but both absences matter. Running back David Montgomery and safety Reed Blankenship are both out for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium, according to the team’s final injury report.
Montgomery’s absence will stretch to a third straight game after he went down with a groin injury in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans had already made it clear earlier in the week that Montgomery was headed toward being ruled out, and Friday’s report locked that in. He did not practice at all this week, and Ryans has labeled him week-to-week, leaving his availability for Week 10 still up in the air.
With Montgomery sidelined, Woody Marks is expected to keep handling lead-back duties. Dare Ogunbowale and Emari Demercado are the only other healthy running backs on the active roster.
Blankenship is also set to miss his second straight game as he continues working back from a concussion and the hand surgery he had after the Texans’ Week 6 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. There’s optimism he could be back next week, but for now Houston will continue with M.J. Stewart starting at safety alongside Calen Bullock.
The Texans did get some good news elsewhere on the report. Pro Bowl linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and star defensive back Jalen Pitre are both cleared to play after putting together full practices over the last two days. Offensive tackles Braden Smith, dealing with an ankle issue, and Blake Fisher, who has been managing a thumb injury, are also set for the weekend after opening the week as limited participants.
On the Chargers’ side, the final report lists several players with uncertain statuses, including OL Kayode Awosika, TE David Njoku, LB Denzel Perryman and WR Brenen Thompson, all doubtful, while DB Deane Leonard and S Kendall Williamson are out.
Even with those absences, Los Angeles appears to be in better shape than it has been at points earlier this season. Joe Alt is back at left tackle, and Ladd McConkey is fully healthy again after being banged up earlier in the year. That gives the Chargers a cleaner look going into Sunday’s matchup with Houston.

C.J. Stroud May Be Driving Up Houston's Biggest Future Bill
C.J. Strouds decision to pass on a preseason extension offer from the Texans already looks more interesting now that he is playing at such a high level. Houston reportedly put a deal on the table worth around $55 million annually, but Stroud chose to keep going without locking in a long-term number, and his play this season has only strengthened his hand for the next round of talks.
For the Texans, the timing is both helpful and a little nerve-wracking. Stroud is under contract through 2027 after the team picked up his fifth-year option, so there is no immediate deadline hanging over the sides, but every strong outing makes the eventual price tag feel a little heavier. If this keeps up, Houston may be negotiating from a very different place than it was before the season. [Read more 🡒]
Texans Now Face A New Chargers Wrinkle In Week 9
The Texans are preparing for a different look from the Chargers in Week 9, with Los Angeles offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel moving from the sideline to the coaches booth to handle play-calling. McDaniel said the switch is meant to give him a cleaner view of the game and better communication with his staff, a small adjustment that can still matter when a team is trying to sort through its offensive issues.
It is a notable wrinkle for Houston because McDaniel will keep his play-calling responsibilities despite the Chargers rough start and 0-7 record. For the Texans, that means facing the same offensive voice, just from a different perch, and it adds another layer to a matchup already shaped by a team looking for answers. [Read more 🡒]
Texans Trade Deadline Focus Is Zeroing In On Two Trouble Spots
The Texans trade deadline plans are starting to come into focus, and the two spots drawing the most attention are running back and safety. According to Albert Breer, Houston has shown interest in adding help at both positions as injuries and uneven play have created some obvious pressure points on the roster.
With the deadline set for Nov. 10, the front office still has time to sort through the market and decide whether a move is worth making. For a team trying to stay balanced on both sides of the ball, those are the kinds of needs that can shape how aggressive it gets over the next few days. [Read more 🡒]
