The Houston Texans are only days from getting camp rolling in full, and the tight end room is already shaping up as one of the most interesting battles on the roster. Rookies have reported, veterans are due later next week, and practices begin July 29th. That’s when the real sorting starts.
At the top of the depth chart, Dalton Schultz is set. He was the Texans’ second-leading receiver last season, and the bigger question is who lands behind him as TE2 - and whether Houston ends up keeping four tight ends or carrying five into Week 1.
There are seven tight ends listed on the Texans’ 90-man roster, but the main competition comes down to four names: Cade Stover, Brevin Jordan, Foster Moreau, and rookie Marlin Klein. Each brings something different, and each has a real case to make.
Stover offers versatility, including work at fullback. Jordan brings the most juice as a receiver if he’s fully back from back-to-back season-ending injuries.
Moreau is the veteran of the group and the best blocker. Klein, a second-round rookie, has the kind of draft status that can move a player up the pecking order fast if he handles camp and preseason well.
That mix is why this battle feels so open. The Texans’ preference for what they want out of that second tight end spot will matter just as much as performance in the next few weeks. If one of these four lags behind, it could make the decision to stop at four tight ends a lot easier.
Even so, a few things already look fairly clear. Klein seems likely to settle in as TE2 or TE3 if he’s healthy and picks up the offense quickly. Jordan also looks like a strong bet to make the roster after showing well through the offseason and offering value as both a blocker and a pass-catcher.
If that plays out, Houston would already have three tight ends in place. The next question becomes who gets squeezed out if the team keeps only four.
Right now, the likeliest odd man out appears to be Stover. He had an underwhelming season in 2025 when he was asked to handle the TE2 role behind Schultz, and Moreau arrived as an early priority signing this offseason. Moreau gives the Texans a dependable blocker in multiple-tight-end looks and can also chip in as a pass-catcher when needed.
Stover doesn’t have the same experience, the same proven production, or the same blocking versatility. And if Houston wants a fullback option, British Brooks in the backfield can fill that role, which would reduce the need to carry five tight ends into Week 1.
So the early read has Schultz, Jordan, Klein, and Moreau making the team in that order, with Stover, Layne Pryor, and Louis Hansen on the outside looking in. But camp and preseason have a way of flipping these things fast, and this one feels like it could change plenty before August is over.
