Texans Have A Bigger Problem Than The Halftime Score

In a tight battle against the Giants, the Texans' improved passing game and costly penalties have defined an intense first half, leaving the teams deadlocked at halftime.

The Texans and Giants went to the locker room knotted at 14-14 after a first half defined by big throws, long field goals and a steady stream of penalties.

Houston opened the scoring with a pair of strikes from Ka'imi Fairbairn, who kept stretching the range on New York with a 58-yard field goal in the first quarter and then drilled a 57-yarder in the second. Those kicks accounted for all of the Texans’ points until C.J. Stroud finally broke through late in the half.

New York answered the first Fairbairn bomb with the explosive play that turned the game early. J.J. McCarthy, making his first start of the season, connected with Malik Nabers on a deep shot that set up Tyrone Tracy’s goal-line touchdown and a 7-3 Giants lead.

The second quarter brought more of the same from McCarthy and company. This time he found Thomas Fidone on a busted coverage, pushing the Giants to the one-yard line before Jameis Winston came in and was tushed pushed through the middle of the defense for New York’s second touchdown of the half. That made it 14-6 and put Houston in a spot where it had to respond before halftime.

The response finally came through the Texans’ passing game. After a 43-yard catch-and-run from Tank Dell, Stroud hit Marvin Harrison Jr. in the back of the end zone for Harrison’s first touchdown as a member of the Texans’ receiving group. That score pulled Houston even at 14-14.

It was a first half that also featured penalties and enough defensive lapses to keep both offenses in striking distance. For Houston, the tie leaves everything on the table as it tries to keep moving away from its 0-4 start.

DeMeco Ryans Sounds Alarm After Texans Loss Exposes Bigger Problems

The Texans came out of overtime with another costly loss, and the bigger concern inside the locker room was how many familiar issues showed up at once. At 2-5, Houston is staring at an uneven start that has been shaped not just by missed chances, but by the kind of sloppy stretches that can undo a game in a hurry. DeMeco Ryans pointed to the offense, the penalties and the coverage breakdowns after the loss to the Giants, all of which left the Texans trying to explain why a winnable afternoon slipped away.

Amid the frustration, there was at least one encouraging sign in Tank Dell's return. Dell made a 43-yard catch-and-run and gave Houston a burst it has been missing, and Ryans said the team plans to expand his workload going forward. For a Texans offense looking for answers, getting Dell back into a bigger role could matter just as much as cleaning up the mistakes that have piled up around him. [Read more 🡒]

Woody Marks Suddenly Has A Texans Opportunity Fans Need To Watch

David Montgomery being ruled out with a groin injury changes the Texans backfield picture in a hurry, and it leaves Woody Marks in line for a much bigger role than he has had to carry so far. With Jawhar Jordan also unavailable, Houstons running game suddenly leans on a player who will need to handle the bulk of the work against the New York Giants, with Dare Ogunbowale and Deuce Vaughn behind him for support.

Offensive coordinator Nick Caley has already signaled that Marks should see a significant workload, which makes this one of the more interesting roster developments heading into the week. For a Texans offense looking to keep balance, the question now is not whether Marks will be involved, but how the team chooses to deploy him with the depth chart thinned out around him. Giants Overtime Hero Revealed A Costly Issue After Beating Texans

A breakaway run can change the feel of a game in a hurry, and Cam Skattebos 42-yard burst in overtime against the Texans did exactly that for the Giants. The rookie back powered his way to a career-high 124 rushing yards and found the end zone once in a performance that helped New York leave Houston with a dramatic win, even as the physical toll of the game started to show afterward.

Skattebo confirmed after the game that he came away with a hamstring injury, a concern that immediately tempers the celebration around one of his best outings yet. The timing at least gives the Giants some breathing room, with a bye week coming before their next game, but the issue is still one Houston fans and the rest of the league will keep an eye on after a grind-it-out overtime finish.
