As the Houston Texans gear up for the final stretch of a tightly contested playoff race, they’re getting a much-needed boost in the backfield-rookie running back Woody Marks is trending toward a return.
Marks was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice, a strong indication that he’s nearing game-ready status after missing Week 16’s win over the Raiders with an ankle injury. There’s still a final hurdle to clear before he’s officially back in the lineup, but full-speed reps this late in the week are a positive sign for his availability in Week 17 against the Chargers.
And make no mistake-his return could be a difference-maker.
Marks, a fourth-round pick, has quickly carved out a central role in Houston’s offense. In his first 14 NFL games, he’s racked up 584 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 167 carries, while also proving to be a threat through the air with 21 catches for 204 yards and three more scores. Those numbers may not jump off the page at first glance, but they speak to consistency and versatility-two traits that have earned him the trust of the Texans’ coaching staff.
From Weeks 6 through 13, Marks saw double-digit carries every week, a clear sign the Texans weren’t treating him like a typical rookie. In fact, his workload only increased as the season progressed-he logged 19 carries in Week 12 and followed that up with a career-high 23 in Week 13. That kind of usage tells you everything you need to know about how Houston views his value in the offense.
Now, the question is how quickly Marks can re-establish his rhythm after the injury. The Texans will be cautious, but they’ll also be counting on him to hit the ground running.
He’s expected to continue sharing the backfield with veteran Nick Chubb, a pairing that offers a blend of experience and explosiveness. Chubb brings the veteran savvy and power, while Marks adds a burst and pass-catching element that keeps defenses guessing.
For a Texans team still fighting for its postseason life, every play counts-and having Marks back in the mix could be the spark that helps push them over the line. Long-term, Houston may have stumbled onto something special in Marks.
But right now, they’re focused on the next game. And with their rookie playmaker trending toward a return, the offense just got a little more dangerous.
