The Texans got a much-needed sign of progress on Thursday and Friday when Trent Brown returned to practice on a limited basis.
That matters because Houston needs help up front. Brown had been out on Wednesday with knee and wrist injuries, so seeing him back on the field in any capacity is a positive development. It still does not mean he is a lock to suit up Sunday, though, when the Texans head to Indianapolis for an AFC South matchup with the Colts.
Brown’s availability is worth tracking closely because Houston’s offensive line has not given C.J. Stroud much comfort through the first two weeks. The unit has had trouble protecting him consistently and has also struggled to open lanes in the run game, which has only added to the pressure on an offense that has already had a hard time finishing drives and reaching the endzone.
That showed up in a big way in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Stroud threw for 353 yards, but the Texans still came away with only six points. The ground game never really got going, which left the passing attack carrying most of the load.
If Brown is able to go Sunday, he could bring some needed stability to a group that has already been stretched thin. If he can’t, Houston would be forced to reshuffle again at a spot where continuity matters.
There is still time for Brown to keep making progress before kickoff, and the Texans will keep a close eye on how his knee and wrist respond as Sunday gets closer. With Houston still looking for its first win of the season, his status is one of the biggest things to watch heading into the game.
Indianapolis will be looking to take advantage if the Texans are vulnerable up front, which makes protecting Stroud and staying on schedule even more important. For Houston, there is little room for error as it tries to avoid digging a deeper hole in the AFC South.
