The Giants’ trip to Houston just got a lot thinner.
New York will be without safety Jevón Holland and tight end Theo Johnson for Sunday’s NFL Week 7 matchup, taking two more starters off the board at a time when the roster is already being stretched. Holland was dealing with a concussion, while Johnson was listed with a neck injury.
Giants downgraded S Jevón Holland (concussion) and TE Theo Johnson (neck) to out for Sunday’s game at Houston.

Holland’s loss hits especially hard in a secondary that had already taken on water earlier in the week. The Giants had already ruled out linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and cornerback Greg Newsome II, leaving the defense lighter before even factoring in Holland’s status. Newsome suffered a concussion against the Saints, and Holland had gone through the concussion protocol this week before being listed as questionable on the final injury report and then shifted to out.
That means New York heads into Sunday with even less room to maneuver on the back end against a Texans offense that has picked up momentum with two straight wins after opening the season 0-4. Houston is 2-4 entering Week 7, while the Giants are 3-2-1 and sitting atop the NFC East.
The Texans have injury issues of their own, with safeties Reed Blankenship and Jalen Pitre, running back David Montgomery and offensive tackle Blake Fisher all unavailable.
Johnson’s absence also creates another headache for New York on offense as the Giants prepare to start J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. Johnson has been a steady part of the tight end mix, and with him out, the Giants will have to lean even more on Isaiah Likely and the rest of their tight ends.
McCarthy earned the start after replacing Jameis Winston in last week’s loss to New Orleans. In that game, he threw for 243 yards and a touchdown after coming off the bench.
Now the Giants are juggling a quarterback change and a thinner skill group at the same time. Johnson’s injury removes another reliable option from the passing game, and Holland’s absence strips another veteran presence from the defense.
With Holland, Johnson, Edmunds and Newsome all out, New York enters Sunday badly shorthanded on both sides of the ball. For a team trying to protect its place in the division, that’s a rough way to walk into Houston.

Texans Catch A Huge Break Against Giants At Exactly The Right Time
The Texans will get an easier path on offense in Week 7 after the Giants ruled out defensive back Jevon Holland and tight end Theo Johnson because of injury. New York also enters the matchup dealing with the loss of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds for the rest of the season, a hit that strips another important piece from a defense that has helped keep the Giants in first place in the NFC East.
For Houston, the timing matters. The Texans are trying to make the most of every opportunity they can get, and facing a Giants team that will be short-handed in multiple spots gives them a better chance to press an advantage before New York heads into its Week 8 bye. Exactly how much that changes the matchup will be part of the story once the game kicks off. [Read more 🡒]
Texans Have A Huge Chance To Keep Rolling If 3 Things Hold
The Texans have suddenly turned their season around with two straight wins after an 0-4 start, and Week 7 against the Giants gives them a chance to keep building momentum. The formula has been clear enough: let C.J. Stroud keep pushing the ball downfield, stay disciplined with the football and keep the offense balanced enough to avoid becoming one-dimensional.
Houstons defense will also have a chance to lean into one of its strengths against a New York offense dealing with quarterback instability, with J.J. McCarthy now in the mix after Jameis Winston. The Texans have been getting after opposing passers all season, and if that pressure shows up again, it could go a long way toward extending this recovery run. [Read more 🡒]
Texans Fans Need To Watch These Draft Battles This Weekend
Saturdays college slate gives Texans fans a useful scouting window, with three matchups that could help shape Houstons draft board. Edge rusher John Henry Daley against tackle Carter Smith should offer a clean look at how one of the classs pass-rush hopefuls handles a notable blocker, while running back Kewan Lacy getting a crack at the Texas defense brings another layer of evaluation for a team that has shown interest in adding talent wherever value pops up.
Ashton Hampton versus wide receiver QueSean Brown is the kind of cornerback-wideout test that can quietly carry real weight for a front office sorting through late-round and developmental options. The Texans are still in the business of finding difference-makers at premium spots, and these are the sorts of one-on-one battles that can move a player up or down in the eyes of evaluators watching for traits, competitiveness and how prospects respond when the stakes rise.
