C.J. Stroud’s brief limp after Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals was enough to raise a few eyebrows, but the early signs out of Houston suggest the Texans are not dealing with a major quarterback injury.
Stroud, who took a beating in the Texans’ 20-6 loss, already pushed back on the idea that something serious had happened. He described what he was feeling afterward as normal “bumps and bruises.”
On Monday, DeMeco Ryans added his own update, and it matched the general tone coming from the quarterback himself.
“I haven’t seen him. Hopefully, he’s fine,” Ryans said.
That doesn’t sound like a team bracing for bad news. Houston also doesn’t appear to be treating Stroud’s situation as a significant concern at this point, though his status is still something to watch as the week unfolds and the Texans turn toward Week 3 against the 0-2 Indianapolis Colts.
Stroud absorbed plenty of contact against Cincinnati. He was sacked four times while throwing 55 passes, but still managed to pile up 353 passing yards, completing 30 of those attempts. He didn’t throw a touchdown or an interception, and he added 29 rushing yards on three carries.
The raw passing total looked strong, but it didn’t translate into much on the scoreboard. Houston mustered only six points, and the offense had trouble finishing drives all afternoon.
The sacks were a major part of the problem. Cincinnati kept getting to Stroud and forcing Houston into tough spots, which made it hard for the Texans to sustain any real rhythm.
So while the postgame limp drew attention, the Texans’ offensive issues went well beyond that moment. For now, the message from both Stroud and Ryans is simple enough: the quarterback took some hits, felt it afterward, and does not appear to be dealing with anything major. The next few days should bring a clearer read on how he’s feeling.

Texans Head To Indianapolis With One Worry Growing Fast
The first two weeks have left Houston with a familiar kind of unease: enough defensive progress to see a path forward, but not nearly enough offensive rhythm to feel good about where this season is headed. After losses to Buffalo and Cincinnati, the Texans have slid in a number of power rankings, and the common theme around the league has been the same one showing up on the field - the offense has not matched the rest of the roster.
Now comes a Week 3 trip to Indianapolis that already feels heavier than an early September game should. C.J. Stroud still looks like the engine of the franchise, but he needs more help, especially up front, where the offensive line remains the clearest concern. The Colts offer a chance to steady the tone before the schedule gets away from Houston, and it is hard to miss how much hinges on the Texans getting the protection and support Stroud needs. Nick Caley Is Already Facing Heat In A Huge Colts Test
Through 22 games, the early returns on Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley have been under the microscope, and the scrutiny is getting louder as Houston tries to dig out of an 0-2 hole. Former NFL player Chris Long recently questioned some of Caleys play-calling choices, adding another layer to the frustration around an offense that has also been slowed by injuries at wide receiver.
The timing is hardly ideal, because Houston is staring at a must-win matchup with the Colts and trying to avoid another sluggish start that has now become part of the conversation around the team. With the offense still searching for rhythm and confidence, this game feels less like a September checkpoint and more like an early test of whether Caley and the Texans can steady things before the season starts to tilt away from them. Texans May Be Facing Another Nico Collins Problem This Week
Nico Collins has already forced the Texans to adjust once, and the early signs this week suggest they may have to do it again. After sitting out multiple practices and missing the Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, Collins was not on the field for the open media portion of Wednesdays session as Houston began preparing for the Indianapolis Colts.
For an offense that leans on Collins as a key target, any extended absence would put more pressure on the rest of the receiving group to absorb his workload. The Texans still have time to see how the week unfolds, but with Collins' availability once again in question, the margin for error looks thinner heading into a division matchup that already carries plenty of weight.
