Texans Defensive Line Takes An Early Hit Before Week 1

As Houston Texans gear up for the new season, rookie Kayden McDonald's early setback raises questions about their defensive depth.

The Houston Texans’ defensive line plan took an early hit Friday when rookie tackle Kayden McDonald was placed on injured reserve, pushing his NFL debut back at least four games.

McDonald, a second-round pick out of Ohio State, is dealing with an ankle injury. The move means he’ll miss the start of the 2026 season and won’t be eligible to return until Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans on October 11, assuming he’s ready to come off IR.

ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime reported that McDonald was not projected to start right away, but he was still expected to be part of the Texans’ tackle rotation because of what he brings against the run: "Rookie defensive tackle Kayden McDonald's debut will have to wait four weeks after he was placed on injured reserve by the Houston Texans on Friday. McDonald, a second-round pick out of Ohio State, is dealing with an ankle injury. He wasn't slated to start but was going to be in the defensive tackle rotation because of his run-stopping ability."

That’s the part Houston will miss most. McDonald wasn’t being handed a starting job, but the Texans clearly had a role mapped out for him. His run defense was supposed to give the rotation a useful edge, especially during a demanding opening stretch.

Instead, Houston will open against the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys without him in the mix. The Texans’ depth chart at defensive tackle now shifts toward Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai as the starters, with Mario Edwards Jr. and Logan Hall also in the picture.

The team addressed the spot by signing Jaden Crumedy in a corresponding move after McDonald went on IR.

The setback is frustrating, but it isn’t season-ending. McDonald still has a chance to make an impact as a rookie once he gets healthy. For now, though, the Texans have to keep moving without one of the more intriguing pieces they added to the defensive front.

Texans Leave Week 1 With A Defensive Problem They Can't Ignore

The Texans opened their 25th anniversary season with the kind of game that can energize a crowd and unsettle a coaching staff at the same time. Houston and Buffalo traded momentum in a back-and-forth matchup, but Josh Allen kept finding answers, finishing with four touchdowns as the Bills edged out a 36-31 win in a game that felt like a showcase for both offenses and a warning sign for the Texans.

For Houston, the bigger concern is what happened after the fireworks. The Texans were in position to keep the pressure on late, but C.J. Stroud was stripped by Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau in a key fourth-quarter sequence, and Allens ability to punish the Texans both through the air and on the ground made it hard to settle the game down. After a season opener built on big plays and lead changes, Houston leaves Week 1 knowing its defense has a problem it has to answer quickly. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Send An Early Message With Week 1 Inactive Decisions

The Texans wasted little time signaling how they want to handle their season opener, rolling out their Week 1 inactive list ahead of Sundays matchup with the Bills. Brevin Jordan is among the six players ruled out as he continues to recover from a knee injury, while recent roster additions Nate Thomas and Jaden Crumedy also will not be available when the teams meet at Reliant Stadium at noon CT.

For Houston, the early inactive decisions are the first real glimpse at how the roster is being managed heading into the opener and which depth pieces are still working their way into the mix. With Buffalo already knowing who it can and cannot count on, the Texans will now try to sort through those absences and still set the tone in front of a home crowd. [Read more 🡒]

Bills Backfield Uncertainty Could Change Texans Week 1 Matchup

A little late-week uncertainty has crept into Buffalos backfield as the Bills sort through Ty Johnsons availability ahead of their Week 1 meeting with the Texans. Johnson is still questionable after an injury, and head coach Joe Brady said the final decision on his status will come closer to game time, leaving Buffalo to weigh its options as it prepares for Houston.

Frank Gore Jr. could be the next man up if the Bills need another running back on the active roster. The practice squad back has limited NFL experience, but his potential elevation would give Buffalo some added depth for a matchup in which every healthy body matters, and it would also give the Texans one more offensive wrinkle to account for in the opener.
