The Houston Texans may have caught a break ahead of their Week 3 divisional matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen said wide receiver Alec Pierce is being placed on injured reserve after suffering a heel injury in last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. That means Pierce will miss at least four games, removing one of Indianapolis’ most dangerous downfield threats from the equation for this weekend.
Pierce’s absence matters because of what he brings to the Colts’ passing game. He stretches the field, forces defenses to respect the deep ball and adds another layer of versatility to the attack.
Houston has seen that first-hand over the last four seasons. In Pierce’s last four games against the Texans, he has averaged three catches and more than 86 receiving yards per game, while scoring four total touchdowns in that span.
Without him, the Texans’ secondary has one less explosive weapon to worry about on every snap. The Colts still have plenty to work with at receiver, but the matchup shifts toward Keenan Allen and Josh Downs, neither of whom brings the same vertical threat Pierce does.
That likely means Indianapolis leans more heavily on the short passing game and underneath throws to Downs, especially from the slot and on the outside. It could also open the door for more snaps for Laquon Treadwell, who saw a bigger role in Week 2 after Pierce was ruled out.
Tyler Warren at tight end remains another piece Houston has to account for. The Texans have already had mixed results defending tight ends through the first two weeks, shutting out Mike Gesicki last week but giving up 130 receiving yards to Dalton Kincaid against the Buffalo Bills.
DeMeco Ryans made it clear earlier this week that Houston views stopping the run as a priority against Indianapolis and Jonathan Taylor. With Pierce unavailable, that emphasis only grows. The expectation is that the Colts will lean harder into their ground game, give Taylor a heavy workload and try to recreate some of the early-2025 success they had built around their star back.
For Houston, the path is straightforward: keep Taylor from popping off and make the Colts win without their field stretcher. If the Texans can do that while Pierce is sidelined, Indianapolis’ offense becomes a much tougher unit to navigate.

Texans Fans Had Every Reason To Watch C.J. Stroud Closely
C.J. Stroud gave Texans fans a brief scare after the game when he appeared to limp, but the quarterback brushed it off as the sort of normal bumps and bruises that come with a season. For a Houston team built around his presence and poise, even a small hitch in his movement is enough to draw attention, especially with the offense so clearly centered on how he feels and functions week to week.
DeMeco Ryans said he had not yet seen Stroud after the game, though the coach said he hoped the quarterback was fine. For now, there is no indication Stroud is dealing with a significant injury, which is the main thing Houston wanted to hear after watching him leave the field with that slight concern hanging in the air. Texans Head To Indianapolis With One Worry Growing Fast
The first two weeks have left Houston with a familiar kind of unease: enough defensive progress to see a path forward, but not nearly enough offensive rhythm to feel good about where this season is headed. After losses to Buffalo and Cincinnati, the Texans have slid in a number of power rankings, and the common theme around the league has been the same one showing up on the field - the offense has not matched the rest of the roster.
Now comes a Week 3 trip to Indianapolis that already feels heavier than an early September game should. C.J. Stroud still looks like the engine of the franchise, but he needs more help, especially up front, where the offensive line remains the clearest concern. The Colts offer a chance to steady the tone before the schedule gets away from Houston, and it is hard to miss how much hinges on the Texans getting the protection and support Stroud needs. Nick Caley Is Already Facing Heat In A Huge Colts Test
Through 22 games, the early returns on Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley have been under the microscope, and the scrutiny is getting louder as Houston tries to dig out of an 0-2 hole. Former NFL player Chris Long recently questioned some of Caleys play-calling choices, adding another layer to the frustration around an offense that has also been slowed by injuries at wide receiver.
The timing is hardly ideal, because Houston is staring at a must-win matchup with the Colts and trying to avoid another sluggish start that has now become part of the conversation around the team. With the offense still searching for rhythm and confidence, this game feels less like a September checkpoint and more like an early test of whether Caley and the Texans can steady things before the season starts to tilt away from them.
