The Texans may already be facing a tougher Week 2 defensive assignment than they wanted, and Jadeveon Clowney’s knee is the latest reason why.
Clowney was not fully involved in practice on Thursday, instead working off to the side because of the injury. That update lands as a real concern for Houston, especially after head coach DeMeco Ryans said Clowney would return to practice today.
It’s a frustrating twist for a defense that was supposed to be one of Houston’s calling cards this season. The Texans brought Clowney into a front that already includes Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, giving the group a look that should have created serious problems for opposing quarterbacks.
That upside showed up in flashes in Week 1, but not nearly enough to carry Houston past Buffalo. The Texans fell 36-31, and the Bills found too much success against a defense that was expected to be sturdier than what showed up on opening day.
Clowney was one of the brighter spots in that loss. He finished with a sack and two quarterback hits against Josh Allen and the Buffalo offense, giving Houston some needed disruption even as the scoreboard kept moving the wrong way.
If Clowney can’t go, the pressure on the rest of the line only rises. Anderson and Hunter are the names that grab the spotlight, but Houston needs more than star power to make this pass rush work the way it’s supposed to.
There’s still a chance Clowney gets back out there before Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Being limited to work on the side doesn’t automatically rule him out, and the Texans will keep watching how the knee responds as the week goes on.

Texans Suddenly Have A C.J. Stroud Protection Problem Before Bengals Game
The Texans are heading into Week 2 with a little more uncertainty around the edges than they would like, and it starts with the availability of two important pieces on offense. Nico Collins has been dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring injury, while right guard Ed Ingram has missed multiple practices because of a groin issue, putting some pressure on Houstons protection plans before Sundays matchup with the Bengals.
Any time a receiver like Collins is limited, it changes how defenses can be handled, but the bigger concern in Houston is how these injuries ripple through the offensive line and the overall rhythm of the unit. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has also sat out several practices with a knee injury, adding another name to the list of Texans trying to get right in time for a game that already looks like it could demand a cleaner, sturdier performance up front. DeForest Buckners Return Could Change Everything For The Colts Defense
DeForest Buckners return to full participation in Colts training camp has given Indianapolis a much-needed boost, especially after he acknowledged he had seriously considered retirement while dealing with multiple injuries. For a defense that leans so heavily on his presence, getting Buckner back on the field changes the tone around the unit and gives head coach Shane Steichen a proven leader to build around as camp moves forward.
For Houston, it is also a reminder of how quickly the AFC South picture can shift when a rivals defensive centerpiece is healthy. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans has already been in the position of defending C.J. Stroud after a rough outing, pointing more to defensive breakdowns than to the quarterbacks turnovers, and matchups with Indianapolis figure to carry plenty of weight if Buckner is back to anchoring that front the way the Colts expect. DeMeco Ryans Saw One Encouraging Texans Sign In A Tough Loss
After a Week 1 loss, DeMeco Ryans still found something encouraging to point to in the Texans performance. He singled out the work of David Montgomery and the offensive line, a small but meaningful sign that Houstons physical identity can still show up even when the final result does not.
For a team trying to settle in early, those kinds of positives matter because they hint at a foundation the Texans can build on. Ryans praise came in a week when the AFC South already featured other teams sorting through communication and execution issues, which only heightens the value of any clean stretch Houston can carry forward.
