The Houston Texans’ rough opening night got a lot worse on Tuesday morning.
Linebacker Henry To’oTo’o is being placed on short-term Injured Reserve after sustaining a shoulder injury in Sunday’s 36-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Reliant Stadium. The setback leaves Houston without one of its key defensive pieces for at least the next four weeks and forces the Texans to reshuffle the middle of the defense fast.
To’oTo’o’s injury came on the heels of a game that exposed plenty of problems for Matt Burke’s unit. Houston gave up 36 points and 432 total yards, and Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen carved up the defense for 334 passing yards and four total touchdowns. The Bills repeatedly found space in the middle of the field, especially on seam routes, with tight end Dalton Kincaid posting 130 yards and wide receiver DJ Moore adding 100 yards and a touchdown.
To’oTo’o kept playing through discomfort late in the third quarter, but Monday afternoon tests confirmed structural damage in his shoulder. Now DeMeco Ryans has to adjust quickly, with rookie Wade Woodaz and veteran backup Jake Hummel expected to step into bigger roles.
Woodaz, who played secondary snaps Sunday while wearing a padded cast on his right thumb, is now in line for a much larger workload next to green-dot caller Azeez Al-Shaair. His speed and instincts stood out in camp, but asking a rookie to handle run fits and cover tight ends right away is a heavy lift.
The Texans did show they can score with anyone. Trade acquisition David Montgomery scored three touchdowns in his debut, and C.J.
Stroud finished with 274 passing yards and two touchdowns. But two Greg Rousseau strip-sacks on Stroud and a secondary that missed on late interception chances helped swing the game the other way.
To’oTo’o’s absence matters well beyond one missed starter. Houston leaned on him for pre-snap communication and coverage help in the middle of the field, the kind of work that lets edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter attack the pocket. Without that piece, the defense is more vulnerable to being stretched by heavy 12-personnel looks, and that’s the kind of issue the Texans now have to sort out quickly with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals coming to town in five days.

Texans Could Shake Up Their Week 2 Rotation After That Opener
After a flat Week 1 loss to the Bills, the Texans are already looking at a few moving parts in their rotation heading into Sundays matchup with the Bengals. Wide receiver Jaylin Noel, tight end Jake Klein and safety Kamari Ramsey all saw limited snaps in the opener, but each flashed enough to keep the coaching staff interested as Houston tries to tighten things up and find more reliable production in a hurry.
The biggest questions could come on defense, where the Texans may adjust their lineup depending on how Reed Blankenship is performing. For a team trying to steady itself after an uneven start, this looks less like a wholesale overhaul and more like a chance to reward players who showed something in brief work and see whether a few targeted changes can give Houston a better feel in Week 2. Texans Suddenly Need A Familiar Linebacker To Steady This Defense
The Texans moved quickly to shore up their linebacker depth, signing Jamal Hill from the practice squad to the 53-man roster after Henry To'oTo'o was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury expected to keep him out for about two months. Hill has been with Houston long enough to be a familiar part of the mix, and his path to this moment has been unusual, with the converted safety now entering his fourth professional season.
For most of his time with the Texans, Hill has been a special teams contributor, but the roster move gives him a more direct role in helping absorb the loss in the middle of the defense. Houston did not have much time to wait around for answers at linebacker, and Hill's promotion is the clearest sign the team is leaning on someone already in the building while To'oTo'o recovers. DeMeco Ryans Just Put Houstons Defense On Notice
The early AFC South chatter has centered on teams trying to sort out who they are after Week 1, and for Houston, the focus has already shifted to how DeMeco Ryans wants his defense to respond. After the loss to the Bills, Ryans pointed to better work from his defensive line in the second half, but also made it clear there were still areas that need to tighten up, especially in coverage. It was the kind of postgame message that sounds less like frustration and more like a coach laying down a standard.
For a Texans defense that is expected to set the tone for the roster, the details matter as much as the result. Ryans did not sugarcoat the growing pains, and that matters in a division where the Colts are calling their opener a wakeup call and Jacksonville is already navigating its own uncertainty while trying to stay steady. Houstons path is still early, but the message from the sideline was unmistakable: improvement is required, and the defense will be judged on how quickly it answers. [Read more 🡒]
