Texans Catch A Huge Break Against Giants At Exactly The Right Time

The Giants face a critical game against the Texans without defensive star Jevon Holland, whose impact has defined their season so far.

The Giants got a tough break on the injury front ahead of Week 7, and this one lands hard.

New York, sitting atop the NFC East at 3-2-1, is preparing to face the Houston Texans before both teams head into a bye. But the roster the Giants bring to that matchup is already looking different.

J.J. McCarthy has taken over at quarterback, Cam Skattebo’s role has shrunk, and Tremaine Edmunds is done for the season.

Now there’s another major loss to deal with.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Giants will be without superstar defensive back Jevon Holland and reserve tight end Theo Johnson against Houston. Both players were ruled out on Saturday, 24 hours before kickoff.

"The Giants downgraded S Jevon Holland (concussion) and TE Theo Johnson (neck) to out for tomorrow's game against the Texans," Garafolo reports.

Johnson’s absence is still a hit, even with Isiah Likely doing more than enough in the No. 1 tight end role. Holland, though, is the real problem. He has been one of the Giants’ best players this season, and losing him removes a major piece from the back end of the defense.

That matters even more this week because the Texans bring C.J. Stroud to town. Stroud has been sharp as a passer this season, and with New York’s top defensive back sidelined, he could be in line for a big afternoon.

The timing is brutal for the Giants, too. They are already without Brian Burns and just lost Edmunds this week, so Holland’s absence adds another crack to a defense that’s taking on water.

Holland has three interceptions and five passes defended this season. He has emerged as a star for New York, and now he’ll miss at least this game because of the concussion.

The good news for the Giants is that the Week 8 bye should limit the damage to one missed game. But even one game can swing things, and this one matters. The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are set to play a game that could leave the winner just 0.5 games behind New York in the NFC East race.

Texans Have A Huge Chance To Keep Rolling If 3 Things Hold

The Texans have suddenly turned their season around with two straight wins after an 0-4 start, and Week 7 against the Giants gives them a chance to keep building momentum. The formula has been clear enough: let C.J. Stroud keep pushing the ball downfield, stay disciplined with the football and keep the offense balanced enough to avoid becoming one-dimensional.

Houstons defense will also have a chance to lean into one of its strengths against a New York offense dealing with quarterback instability, with J.J. McCarthy now in the mix after Jameis Winston. The Texans have been getting after opposing passers all season, and if that pressure shows up again, it could go a long way toward extending this recovery run. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Get An Early Edge Against A Shorthanded Giants Team

The Giants injury list keeps growing ahead of their Week 7 matchup with the Texans, and the latest absences only make Houstons path look a little cleaner. New York has already been dealing with defensive issues, and now it has ruled out safety Jevn Holland after concussion protocol and tight end Theo Johnson because of a neck injury, two more hits to a roster that is thinning at an inconvenient time.

For a Texans team trying to stack wins and stay on schedule, that kind of news matters. A short-handed Giants group is easier to test on both sides of the ball, especially with Houston looking to take advantage early and avoid letting a patched-together opponent settle in. There is still plenty of football to play, but the opening edge already appears to be tilting toward the Texans. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Fans Need To Watch These Draft Battles This Weekend

Saturdays college slate gives Texans fans a useful scouting window, with three matchups that could help shape Houstons draft board. Edge rusher John Henry Daley against tackle Carter Smith should offer a clean look at how one of the classs pass-rush hopefuls handles a notable blocker, while running back Kewan Lacy getting a crack at the Texas defense brings another layer of evaluation for a team that has shown interest in adding talent wherever value pops up.

Ashton Hampton versus wide receiver QueSean Brown is the kind of cornerback-wideout test that can quietly carry real weight for a front office sorting through late-round and developmental options. The Texans are still in the business of finding difference-makers at premium spots, and these are the sorts of one-on-one battles that can move a player up or down in the eyes of evaluators watching for traits, competitiveness and how prospects respond when the stakes rise.
