Texans Catch A Break With Jalen Pitre But New Concern Emerges

Despite a setback against the Titans, Texans defensive back Jalen Pitre may return sooner than expected, offering a hopeful outlook for the team's defense.

The Houston Texans got a better read on Jalen Pitre’s shoulder injury, and it sounds like they escaped the kind of news that could have really changed the shape of their defense.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, Pitre suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder during Sunday’s Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans and is considered week-to-week. That gives Houston some breathing room, even if it still leaves open the possibility that one of its most important defenders misses time.

Pitre went down in the second half against Tennessee and did not return. After the game, head coach DeMeco Ryans said the team was still evaluating him, and now the picture is a little clearer. There’s still a chance Pitre sits out the Texans’ Week 6 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the key point is that this does not appear to be a long-term issue.

That matters for a player who has been central to what Houston does on defense. Pitre has played as a versatile nickel/safety and has been on the field for more than 90% of the Texans’ defensive snaps this season. In five games, he has totaled 24 combined tackles, one tackle for loss, five passes defended and a forced fumble.

This wouldn’t be the first time Houston has had to manage without him. Pitre missed three games in 2025 with a concussion, so the Texans have already had a glimpse of life without one of their most flexible defenders. Even so, a week-to-week designation is a much better outcome than the kind of worst-case scenario the team may have feared when he left Week 5.

The schedule could end up helping Houston here, too. The Texans play the Jaguars in Week 6, then host the New York Giants in Week 7 before their Week 8 bye. That setup could allow Pitre to miss two games and still get an extra week of rest before Houston returns in Week 9 against the LA Chargers.

If Pitre is unavailable, fifth-round rookie Kamari Ramsey looks like the likely next man up. Ramsey has experience playing both safety and nickel at USC, and he already filled in for Pitre after the injury against the Titans. So far this season, Ramsey has logged 40 defensive snaps, six tackles and one tackle for loss.

Houston still has a few practices before heading to London, and those reps will help the coaching staff sort out the plan without Pitre for Week 6. But for the Texans, the biggest takeaway is simple: this could have been a lot worse.

Texans Pass Rush Just Got A Huge Opening Vs Jaguars

A major question mark just opened up for Jacksonville heading into its Week 6 meeting with the Texans in London. Jaguars left tackle Anton Harrison is expected to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, and the timeline could keep him out for 3-5 weeks, with the possibility of a season-ending outcome still on the table.

For Houston, the timing matters. The Texans already have a strong defensive line, and now they may face a Jaguars front that has to adjust without one of its key edge protectors. However the Jaguars sort out the spot, the left side of their line will be under immediate scrutiny against a Texans pass rush that should see this as a chance to tilt the matchup. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Landed Marvin Harrison Jr As Strange Cardinals Rift Emerges

Houston spent part of the offseason looking to add more punch to its passing game, and now it has a major name to build around. Marvin Harrison Jr. is officially headed to the Texans from Arizona in a deal that sends a second-round pick and additional Day 3 selections to the Cardinals, a move that gives Houston a high-profile target with plenty still left to prove after a quieter second season in the desert.

For Arizona, the trade closes a tense chapter that never seemed to settle into the expected rhythm. Harrisons production dipped in year two, and the backdrop around his time with the Cardinals included a reported disagreement over a workout machine purchase, one of those odd little details that can take on outsized meaning when a relationship starts to fray. Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort thanked Harrison in a statement and wished him well, while Houston now gets to see whether a fresh start can unlock the player both sides envisioned. C.J. Stroud Sees One Big Challenge For Texans New Weapon

C.J. Stroud did not hide his excitement about Houston adding Marvin Harrison Jr., a move that instantly changes the look of the Texans passing game. The quarterback spoke highly of Harrisons route-running, work ethic and character, and he sees the receiver as someone who can grow into one of the NFLs best if everything clicks around him.

For Stroud, though, the biggest hurdle is not talent. It is the adjustment that comes with a new locker room and a new offense, the kind of transition every receiver has to absorb before the production follows. For Houston, that means the early focus will be on getting Harrison comfortable and up to speed, because the upside is obvious once he settles in. [Read more 🡒]
