Training camp is almost here for the Houston Texans, and that means the roster math is about to get real. A few players are staring at a crowded path to the 53-man roster, while others already look like they have the inside track.
With camp set to open next week, here’s a look at 10 Texans on the bubble and where they stand heading in.
The clearest “in” cases start with the trenches and the special teams core. Andrews earned the Texans’ trust by starting at center for all 17 games and both playoff games in 2025, even after the snap issues he had in the Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That kind of usage makes it hard to see Houston suddenly changing course, even if he’s projected to back up Keylan Rutledge.
Brooks also looks safe. He may not be the flashiest offensive piece, but he mattered plenty on special teams last season and can fill in at fullback in certain looks. That versatility gives him an edge over Houston’s two UDFAs and Evan Huff, which should keep him as the last man in for the running back group.
Hansen has a real opening in a linebacker room that isn’t locked down. He’s been with the team for four seasons and has slowly taken on more work on defense beyond special teams.
With E.J. Speed injured, Houston could lean on him even more.
Reed also lands in the “in” column despite an injury-shortened first season in Houston. He had a couple of eye-catching moments, including his showing against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football, and that’s enough to justify another run with the team. If he stays healthy, he should be back in 2026, even with the depth the safety room offers.
Watson is another name worth watching closely. Seven wide receivers would be a lot for Houston to carry into Week 1, but that’s what the Texans did last year, and Watson was part of that group. If he’s truly back to 100 percent after his 2025 Achilles injury, he can make a push for the roster.
Not everyone on the list has that kind of path. Fisher is an intriguing rookie with strong college production, but the linebacker room is crowded, especially with another fourth-round pick in Wade Woodaz in the mix. Practice squad looks like the most realistic landing spot unless he has a huge camp.
Fisher the offensive tackle faces an even steeper climb. Houston already appears set with Aireontae Ersery on the left side, Braden Smith on the right, and Trent Brown able to back up either spot. That leaves Fisher without a clear role on the 53-man roster.
Hill is in a similar spot at linebacker. There’s room for someone to seize a bigger role, but he hasn’t separated himself over three seasons the way Hansen has. Add in the offseason investment in Wade Woodaz and Marte Mapu, and Hill could be squeezed out.
Stover’s outlook is shaky after an underwhelming second season. Brevin Jordan is coming back from injury, Foster Moreau brings more experience and blocking ability, and Marlin Klein is locked in as a second-round pick. Unless Houston decides to keep five tight ends for Week 1, Stover is the most likely odd man out.
Sobkowicz has some appeal as a UDFA, and some might argue he should have been drafted, but the Texans’ receiver room is simply packed. He looks like a strong practice squad candidate who can work toward a bigger role later.
Camp will sort the rest out soon enough, but these are the names sitting right on the edge as Houston gets closer to cutdown season.
