Texans Bring Back Former Titans Receiver Before A Notable Week 5 Test

The Texans shake up their roster by adding former Titan Bryce Oliver, setting the stage for a dramatic Week 5 showdown.

The Houston Texans are adding a familiar face to the mix just days before their Week 5 meeting with the Tennessee Titans.

Houston has signed wide receiver Bryce Oliver to the 53-man roster, according to the team. It’s a notable move because Oliver spent time with the Texans only recently, after landing on their practice squad in September following his release from Tennessee on cutdown day. That stint was short-lived, though, as Houston let him go on September 30th.

Now he’s back, and this time he’s on the main roster.

Oliver, 26, stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 214 pounds. He’s in his third season as a pro and spent two years as a regular part of the Titans’ receiver group from 2024 to 2025. The undrafted Youngstown State product has appeared in 13 NFL games, all with Tennessee, and logged more than 200 combined offensive and special teams snaps during that stretch.

His production at the pro level has been modest so far: seven catches on 10 targets for 103 yards. He also handled kick return duties in 2024, finishing with three returns for 113 yards.

That profile helps explain why Houston appears to see him as more than just extra receiver depth. With five wideouts already on the active roster before the move, the Texans now have six, and Oliver looks positioned to contribute mostly on special teams unless injuries or other changes open a bigger lane on offense.

The top of the depth chart remains crowded. Nico Collins, Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel and Kayshon Boutte are ahead of him, with Jared Wayne also in the mix. Tank Dell is another name that can’t be overlooked, especially now that his 21-day return window has been activated from injured reserve, which suggests Houston’s receiver room could shift again soon.

Oliver’s arrival also marks the Texans’ second practice squad reunion of the week. On Wednesday, the team brought back quarterback Mark Gronkowski, giving Houston a third signal caller on the depth chart.

If Oliver is active on game day, his first chance to make an impression will come against the Titans, the team where he began his career, on Sunday at 12 PM MT.

George Pickens Just Added To The Texans Secondary's Awkward Problem

George Pickens had plenty of reason to respect what the Texans brought up front after the Cowboys game, and he made sure to point it out afterward. Asked about Houstons defense, the Dallas receiver credited the Texans pass rush, naming Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter as the players who stood out most to him in the trenches.

What he did not do was extend the same praise to Houstons secondary, even when the conversation gave him the chance. For a Texans defense trying to establish itself as a complete unit, that kind of split reaction is the sort of postgame detail that lingers, because it suggests the front did its job while the back end still has something to prove. Texans Need DeMeco Ryans To Spark What This Defense Lacks

The Texans have stumbled to an 0-4 start, and the defense has become a major reason the season has gone sideways early. As Houston prepares for its Week 5 meeting with the Titans, DeMeco Ryans has moved to take a more direct role in fixing the unit, putting himself at the center of the effort to steady a group that has not yet looked like a cohesive whole.

Will Anderson Jr. has backed Ryans' approach, saying the head coach brings the kind of accountability the defense needs right now. For a team trying to stop an early slide, that combination of firmness and trust could matter as much as anything on the call sheet, especially with the Texans searching for a response that shows up in a divisional game. DeMeco Ryans Put Texans O-Line On Notice Before Titans Game

The Texans ground game has been one of the quieter frustrations of the season, with Houston sitting near the bottom of the league in both total rushing yards and yards per carry. As Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans approaches, DeMeco Ryans has made it clear where he believes the next step has to come from, putting the focus squarely on the offensive line and the way it handles the run game.

Houston has protected its quarterback well enough to give the offense a fighting chance, but the run-blocking has not matched that standard. Ryans wants to see more consistent work up front, the kind that keeps blocks alive and helps finish plays instead of letting runs die early, and the Titans game offers another chance for that part of the offense to show it can become more than a lingering issue.
