Texans Boost David Montgomery's Deal with Major Signing Bonus Twist

The Texans have strengthened their backfield by upgrading David Montgomery's contract, aiming to bolster their running game with a proven powerhouse.

In a strategic move, the Houston Texans have revamped running back David Montgomery’s contract following his trade from the Detroit Lions. Montgomery's new deal is worth $16.5 million over the next two seasons, featuring a $6.5 million signing bonus. This year, he’s set to earn a fully guaranteed $1.5 million base salary, with an additional potential $500,000 in per-game active roster bonuses, bringing his first-year earnings up to $8.5 million.

Looking ahead to next year, Montgomery will receive a $7.5 million salary, $2 million of which is guaranteed, along with another $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses. The Texans acquired Montgomery by trading offensive guard Juice Scruggs, a fourth-round pick, and a seventh-round pick.

Previously, Montgomery was on a nonguaranteed $5.49 million base salary for this year and $7.49 million for 2027, with void years in 2028 and 2029. His move to Houston marks a fresh chapter in his career, and he’s eager to make an impact under coach Ryans.

“Houston was definitely the place that I wanted to go,” Montgomery shared during a virtual press conference. He praised the Texans’ competitive spirit and expressed his excitement to play under coach Ryans, aiming to prove his worth among the league’s elite.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Bears, Montgomery has accumulated 6,115 rushing yards and 59 touchdowns in his career. He had a standout year in 2023 with Detroit, rushing for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns. His career-best came in 2020 with 1,070 rushing yards while with Chicago.

Over his three-year stint with the Lions, Montgomery racked up 2,506 yards and 33 touchdowns. Last season, he averaged 4.5 yards per carry, contributing to a career average of 4.1 yards per run. The Texans, who ranked 22nd in rushing last season with an average of 3.9 yards per carry, are in dire need of Montgomery's skills to boost their ground game.

Montgomery’s durability is another asset, having played every game last season. He also caught 24 passes for 192 yards, adding to his career totals of 231 receptions for 1,890 yards and four touchdowns. His presence is set to be a cornerstone for the Texans’ offense, providing the spark they need to elevate their rushing attack.
