Tank Dell’s name was missing from the Texans’ Physically Unable to Perform list, and that was the update Houston had been waiting for.
When NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Houston Texans had officially released their PUP list, Dell’s absence from it signaled that he has been cleared to take part in training camp. For a team that has spent months waiting on one of its most explosive weapons, that is no small development.
Dell’s return comes after a brutal stretch that wiped out the entire 2025 season. In December 2024 at Arrowhead Stadium, he suffered a torn ACL, LCL, MCL, a dislocated knee, and structural meniscus damage.
The injury was severe enough that his career, and even his day-to-day mobility, were in question. What followed was an 18-month rehabilitation process that demanded patience and persistence from a player whose game is built on suddenness, sharp cuts, and top-end speed.
The Texans have already seen what Dell can do alongside C.J. Stroud.
In their rookie season together, the two showed a rare kind of chemistry when plays broke down, the sort of backyard-football connection that can turn nothing into something in a heartbeat. Dell also gives Houston a different kind of stress point for defenses: his speed pulls safety help deep, which can open space underneath for Nico Collins and Dalton Schultz.
That matters even more now that Collins has established himself as an elite primary target. Houston managed to survive Dell’s absence, but the offense clearly missed the extra gear he brings. He is not just another receiver in the rotation; he changes how defenses have to line up.
Still, the Texans have to be smart with him. The clearance is a major step, but it does not mean Houston should rush him into everything at once.
The plan is expected to be gradual, with contact work eased in during camp and live preseason reps limited. The emphasis will be on route-running, lateral movement, and controlled deceleration as Dell rebuilds confidence in the knee.
The target is simple: not July glory, but full speed when the games start mattering most.
If Dell comes back looking like himself, Houston’s passing game gets a lot more dangerous. With Stroud in place and Dell back on the field, the Texans’ offense has the chance to move from solid to something far more threatening, the kind of unit that can keep Houston’s Super Bowl hopes alive.
