Fernando Mendoza got a meaningful look on Tuesday, and it may have been the clearest sign yet that his path to the Raiders’ starting job is moving forward.
During Las Vegas’ joint practice with the Houston Texans, the rookie quarterback worked with the first team for the first time in a session and logged extensive reps against Houston’s starters. The Raiders are still leaning on veteran Kirk Cousins to open the season, but Mendoza’s turn with the top group showed he is getting closer to the role the team appears to have in mind for him.
Head coach Klint Kubiak said the matchup was intentional. He wanted Mendoza to face a defense that would push him right away.
“I wanted to see him going against the Texans ’ ones,” Kubiak said after practice. “That was our plan all along.
I thought he did some good things. I look forward to watching the tape.
But just he and his teammates, all these young guys that we’re playing, we’ve got to get them up to speed real quick.”
The challenge was a serious one. Houston finished last season with the No. 1-ranked defense in yardage allowed, so this was hardly a soft landing spot for a rookie still getting his footing. But that’s exactly the kind of work that can speed up a quarterback’s adjustment to the NFL.
Mendoza already gave the Raiders something to build on in his preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals, when he went 10 of 16 for 97 yards and a touchdown. Tuesday’s practice was another step, and another indication that the rookie is moving into bigger and bigger moments in camp.

Texans O Line Battle Is Putting Two Starting Jobs At Risk
The Texans are using the preseason to sort out their offensive line, and the most interesting questions are centered right in the middle of it. Houston is looking at multiple options at center and right guard as it tries to find the best combination to protect CJ Stroud and help the run game, with Jake Andrews, Keylan Rutledge and Evan Brown all in the mix at center and Ed Ingram among the players being weighed at right guard.
For a unit that has been under the microscope since camp opened, the competition is about more than just filling spots on a depth chart. The staff is still evaluating which linemen can hold up best in pass protection and bring enough consistency in the trenches, and that means jobs at both center and right guard are very much unsettled as the preseason moves along. Texans Tackle Battle Just Got More Complicated After Raiders Practice
Blake Fisher made a strong impression during the Texans joint practice with the Raiders, holding his own in a demanding setting against one of the leagues most disruptive edge rushers. Houston coach DeMeco Ryans came away encouraged by the effort up front, a good sign for an offensive line group that is still trying to sort out its depth and find stability before the season begins.
Fishers day mattered because these preseason reps are often where roster arguments get made, especially for a young tackle trying to carve out a role. If he keeps stacking practices like this, the Texans will have a tougher decision when it comes time to trim the roster, which is exactly the kind of pressure Houston wants on a player fighting to stick. Texans Suddenly Face A Big WR Question Opposite Nico Collins
The Texans were already sorting through how to complement Nico Collins on the outside, and now that conversation has taken a sharp turn. Jayden Higgins, heading into his second NFL season, was expected to be part of that answer before a knee injury in joint work with the Raiders changed the picture and left Houston with a clear opening in its receiver rotation.
Xavier Hutchinson is the most obvious name to step into that space, and the timing gives the move extra weight. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Hutchinson should see more chances in the coming season, and this stretch now looms as an important one for both his role and his future with the Texans.
