Shannon Dawson’s name sits near the top of the coaching market for a reason. After the way Miami’s offense has hummed under his watch, it’s hard to look at the Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator as anything other than one of the sport’s most valuable play callers.
That kind of profile usually doesn’t go unnoticed for long. With openings at Baylor and NC State, Dawson looks like a coach who could be on the move once Miami’s season ends, and both jobs appear to suit him well.
Dawson is the kind of coach players gravitate toward, and that reputation has only grown with what he’s done on offense. He has made his mark through fundamental execution and a system that keeps producing results. That’s been true going back to Clayton Tune at Houston, and the track record since then has only added to Dawson’s value.
A move to a bigger job would not be a surprise, but the fit matters here. Baylor and NC State both stand out as places where a creative offensive mind can make an immediate impact without needing to walk into a blue-blood spotlight. Dawson, 49, from Clinton, Louisiana, comes off as the kind of coach who can thrive in that space.
Baylor, in particular, feels like a natural landing spot. The Bears have made it clear they want an offensive-minded coach with Texas ties who can help them return to the level they once reached under Art Briles, without the baggage that ended Briles’ career.
Dawson’s connection to the state runs through his time at Stephen F. Austin in the late 2000s and at Houston from 2019-2022, before he joined Mario Cristobal’s staff at Miami.
NC State is a little different, but the appeal is still there. The Wolfpack have already shown they’re willing to invest in the program, and they had to pay a pretty penny to keep quarterback CJ Bailey in the fold. The one thing that was clear in Raleigh was that the future did not include Dave Doeren, even if the rest of the roadmap remains less defined.
For Dawson, the quarterback piece is part of the draw. Both Baylor and NC State have talented passers with questions attached.
Bailey has had his highs and lows, while DJ Lagway brings the kind of arm talent and five-star pedigree that gets an offensive coordinator’s attention. Neither has had steady enough coaching to fully unlock what they can do, which makes Dawson’s presence especially appealing.
He’d also bring some serious credibility from Miami. The Hurricanes have been outstanding on offense since he arrived.
Cam Ward went No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft after one year with Dawson, Darian Mensah looks like he’ll be a Heisman finalist, and Malachi Toney has become one of the top five players in the sport. Dawson’s system is built to generate points and yards, and that alone makes him a strong candidate whenever a program is looking to reboot the offense.
If Baylor is spelling out the kind of coach it wants, Dawson checks a lot of boxes. He works well with quarterbacks, his offense is easy on the eyes, and his résumé has real traction. Whether it’s Lagway, Bailey or even Maryland’s Malik Washington, quarterbacks with talent are going to push hard for schools to take a serious look at Dawson.

Texans Trade Deadline Pressure Is Rising But Caserio Isn't Budging
The Texans latest loss only sharpened the scrutiny on the front office, with Houston dropping to 2-5 after a 27-21 overtime defeat to the Giants in Week 7. For a team that entered the season with higher hopes, the setback added more urgency around a roster that has yet to find steady footing, especially as inconsistency continues to show up on both sides of the ball.
Nick Caserio did little to feed the trade-deadline speculation in his press conference, saying the Texans do not expect to make major personnel changes. The message was clear: Houston believes the fix has to come from cleaner, more consistent play, even as the defense sits in the bottom half of the league in most major categories aside from rushing yards allowed. Texans Suddenly Have A WR Concern Heading Into The Bye
The Texans receiving depth took a hit in Week 7 when Jaylin Noel left the game against the Giants with a turf toe injury, a setback that came at an awkward time with the bye week arriving next. DeMeco Ryans confirmed the injury afterward and said Noel is still being evaluated, leaving Houston to wait and see how much time the rookie wideout might miss.
Noel was reportedly in a walking boot after the game, which is never a great sign for a player whose role had been growing as the season moved along. With the Texans heading into a break, the extra days should help clarify the outlook, but the issue is now one the offense has to monitor closely as it prepares for the second half of the schedule. Texans Loss Got Worse With A Jaylin Noel Injury Concern
The Texans 27-21 loss to the Giants already left them with plenty to sort through from Week 7, and now there is added concern around one of their young receivers. Jaylin Noel came out of the game with a turf toe injury, and head coach DeMeco Ryans said he is still being evaluated as Houston heads into its bye week.
Houston will use the break to get a clearer picture of Noels recovery and whether he can be back when the schedule resumes. For a team trying to steady itself after a frustrating defeat, the next few days now matter for more than just regrouping from the loss, because the Texans also have to wait on a player whose availability could affect their receiver rotation moving forward.
