The Houston Texans’ rise has been built in large part on defense, but Nico Collins has become just as central to what they do on offense.
That’s the view around the league, too. In ESPN’s recent wide receiver rankings, Collins landed at No. 8, a spot that put him ahead of some other big names at the position. Not everyone agreed on where he belonged - some personnel members left him off entirely, while others pushed him all the way up to third among NFL receivers.
Still, one NFL executive made the case in especially strong terms. Asked what a receiver built from the ground up might look like, the executive pointed straight at Collins.
"Combination of size, strength and speed, route running, hands and ball skills," the league executive said of Collins. "Can make plays when contested and is physical after the catch."
That description fits the Texans star almost too neatly. At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Collins has the kind of frame teams dream about for a true outside target. He pairs that size with the athleticism to win downfield, the hands to finish tough catches, and enough explosiveness to do damage once the ball is in his hands.
The production backs it up. Over the past three seasons with C.J. Stroud, Collins has put together three straight 1,000-yard campaigns, and he’s done it without playing a full 17-game schedule in any of them.
His latest season ended with 71 catches, 1,117 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. A concussion cut into his year in the middle of the season, and he also sat out the final week of the regular season.
Availability is the one real question hanging over him. Collins has still not played a full 17-game season in his career, and he was also knocked out of the Texans’ latest playoff run after suffering a second concussion in less than six months.
Even with that concern, the profile is hard to miss. Collins checks the boxes as a deep threat and an X-receiver, the kind of player who can lift both the floor and the ceiling of an offense. If he stays healthy, he looks set up for another big season in 2026.
The Texans still have major questions to answer on offense this year, and some of them could shape their Super Bowl hopes. Collins, though, is not one of the unknowns.
