Kamari Ramsey gave the Houston Texans a little reminder in training camp yesterday that he’s not just another rookie taking reps.
Working against quarterback Davis Mills and the second-team offense, the rookie safety/nickel cornerback jumped a throw, picked off Mills, and carried it a few yards before officials ruled him down. It wasn’t a pick-six, but it was the kind of snap that gets attention fast. For a Texans defense already packed with playmakers, Ramsey put himself on the board with a clear flash of what he can bring.
Houston drafted Ramsey in the fifth round out of USC after he earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention recognition from 2024-2025, and he’s landed in a spot that could suit him well. He enters the league with a chance to grow into a versatile piece in the middle of what was the best defense in the NFL last season. Early camp moments like this one only add to the sense that his path could be trending upward if he keeps stacking reps in defensive coordinator Matt Burke’s scheme.
What makes Ramsey interesting is the way he can be moved around. He can line up as a safety or slide into nickel cornerback work depending on the package, and that kind of flexibility echoes how Jalen Pitre is used.
Ramsey brings physicality, anticipation and competitiveness at the catch-point, which gives Houston options in the short-to-intermediate passing game. He also has the kind of temperament to crash toward the line and help out against the run, functioning almost like a pseudo-linebacker in certain looks, again similar to Pitre.
The interception total itself may not be the biggest selling point right away. The Texans are more likely to value Ramsey for how he can fit different defensive jobs and help match whatever an opposing coordinator throws at them.
Of course, the path to steady playing time isn’t simple. Pitre is already locked in at the position, and Ramsey is competing with second-year players Alijah Huzzie and Jaylen Reed, along with veteran M.J. Stewart, who has been recovering from the torn quadriceps he suffered last season in week 10’s 36-29 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Still, if Ramsey keeps producing moments like the one he delivered yesterday, he can put himself in position for more meaningful reps. The rest of training camp, along with the entire preseason, will go a long way in shaping what comes next for him in Houston.
