Joey Porter Jr.’s first game at AT&T Stadium will have to wait.
The Cowboys ruled the cornerback inactive for Thursday Night Football against the Buccaneers in a surprise move made about 90 minutes before kickoff. Porter had already debuted for Dallas in the win over the Texans, where he started for a defense that needed help in a hurry. This time, though, he was left out entirely.
Dallas listed Porter as inactive because of an illness. The team didn’t provide any further details, but NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that Porter was “very sick” after arriving at AT&T Stadium and was sent home.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo added that Porter was “vomiting with a bad virus.” Porter also appeared to be unwell as he entered the stadium.
His absence is another hit for a Cowboys defense that has had issues in both victories and defeats, and now it goes into the matchup without one of its newest additions against undrafted rookie QB Jalon Daniels.
Porter’s Dallas timeline has moved quickly. He missed the Steelers’ first three games, then was traded to the Cowboys on Sept. 30 after sitting out all of Pittsburgh’s training camp with what was labeled a back injury. It later became clear that his absence was at least partly tied to a contract stalemate with the franchise.
Amazon Prime Video’s James Palmer reported that Porter had been expected to handle more snaps after being eased in against the Texans, but that plan is on hold for now.
With Porter unavailable, Dallas may lean on Cobie Durant and Ameer Speed for expanded roles. The Dallas Morning News’ Joseph Hoyt reported that Speed could be headed for a major workload after playing a career-high number of snaps against the Texans.

Chiefs Receiver Search Suddenly Matters To Texans Fans For One Reason
With the Chiefs suddenly looking for wide receiver help after injuries hit Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton, a familiar name has surfaced in their search. Kansas City has already shown interest in bringing back Justin Watson, who spent three seasons with the Chiefs and was part of their Super Bowl runs, as the team tries to shore up depth before the season moves further along.
For Texans fans, the wrinkle is obvious because Watson was released by Houston during August roster cuts, a move that now looks a little more noticeable with another contender circling. The Chiefs have also checked in on Tyreek Hill, but his knee recovery and civil lawsuit make any possible reunion far less straightforward, leaving Kansas City with questions to answer even as it scans the market for help. Texans Quietly Sent A Bigger Davis Mills Signal Than Fans Realized
The Texans made a quiet but meaningful adjustment to Davis Mills deal, turning his backup quarterback contract into a little more cap-friendly work for the present. Houston reworked Mills salary structure this week, a move that gives the team extra breathing room now while keeping one eye on the future for a player who has remained a steady part of the quarterback room.
Mills is still set to hit unrestricted free agency after the 2026 season, but the nature of this restructure hints the Texans may not view him as a short-term placeholder only. By creating room this year and pushing some of the accounting down the line, Houston opened the door to a longer arrangement, even if the club has not yet made that commitment public. [Read more 🡒]
C.J. Stroud Just Raised Texans Hopes For Tank Dells Return
C.J. Stroud gave the Texans a much-needed lift in tone this week by signaling that Tank Dell is getting close to rejoining the offense. Houston is still hunting its first win at 0-4, and the timing matters, because the passing game could use another dynamic target as the season starts to press on.
Stroud also spoke highly of Kayshon Boutte, praising the receivers progress and reliability, which suggests the Texans are trying to piece together more trust around their quarterback while waiting for reinforcements. Dells path back has been long, and his return would give Houston a proven playmaker at a moment when every bit of offensive help carries extra weight. [Read more 🡒]
