Joe Burrow’s Week 2 status is already worth watching after the Bengals quarterback missed Wednesday’s practice because of back tightness.
The concern comes just one week after Cincinnati opened the season with a 33-27 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was a solid victory for the Bengals, even if the final score stayed close.
On Wednesday, though, Burrow was absent from practice in any meaningful way, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network relayed the quarterback’s explanation. Burrow said he is dealing with back tightness, but still expects to play against the Houston Texans.
"Bengals QB Joe Burrow told reporters he is dealing with back tightness and didn't practice today," Rapoport reports. "He got plenty of mental reps and expects to play Sunday."
That’s not the kind of update Cincinnati wanted this early in the season. Burrow is already working through an issue in Week 2, and the matchup ahead looks tougher than the one he just navigated.
The Texans present a different kind of challenge than Tampa Bay did, and the source material points out that they are likely to give Burrow more trouble. Josh Allen put up big numbers against Houston in Week 1, but that doesn’t guarantee the same kind of result for Cincinnati.
With a banged-up Burrow facing what the source describes as one of the best defenses in the NFL, there is real reason for concern. At the same time, his own expectation that he’ll suit up Sunday should ease some of the alarm around the Bengals’ quarterback.
