Houston Shakes Up QB Room As Stroud Concerns Grow

Deck: In a strategic move to bolster their quarterback depth, the Houston Texans have added former Dolphins QB Mark Gronkowski to their practice squad just as the season kicks off.

The Houston Texans made a late addition at quarterback just days before opening Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, bringing in Mark Gronowski for the practice squad, according to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson.

That move gives Houston a third quarterback in the building behind starter C.J. Stroud and backup Davis Mills. The Texans had been carrying only two quarterbacks after last month’s roster cuts, and the position looked even thinner after Graham Mertz, who had been lined up as the team’s third quarterback, tore his ACL in Houston’s first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Houston later turned to veteran Brett Rypien, who played in the final two preseason games before being cut. With the season approaching, the Texans were left to sort through whether they would add another arm for depth, and Gronowski is the one they chose.

Gronowski arrives after spending time with the Dolphins and after a college career that built a reputation for winning. He spent four years at South Dakota State before his 2025 transfer to Iowa, and he’s now the all-time NCAA leader across all levels for total quarterback wins in a career, with 58 victories between South Dakota State and Iowa.

His production backs up the résumé. Gronowski finished college with a 63.7% completion rate, more than 12,000 total yards, 103 passing touchdowns, and 27 interceptions. He also added plenty on the ground, piling up 2,312 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns on more than 500 carries.

At 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, he gives Houston a dual-threat option on the practice squad, one capable of helping with both his arm and his legs.

Gronowski was on the Dolphins’ 90-man roster before this season, but he did not see a large preseason workload before being released. His busiest outing came against the Atlanta Falcons in the third week of the preseason, when he completed four of eight passes for 97 yards and ran four times for 28 yards.

That showing, along with his camp work, wasn’t enough to earn a spot on Miami’s 53-man roster. Houston, though, saw enough to add him to its 16-man practice squad.

For now, Gronowski is expected to stay there unless something changes. The Texans appear set to move forward with Stroud and Mills on the active roster, but the addition offers a little more insurance at a spot that can change quickly. Texans fans saw that last season when Stroud missed three games after suffering a concussion in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos, a reminder that quarterback depth matters in a hurry.

Texans Just Got An Early Warning About How Fast Games Flip

The NFLs first Sunday already offered a reminder that nothing is safe once the clock starts to wind down, and Seattles 13-10 win over New England fit that script perfectly. The Seahawks played through key injuries, stared at a 10-point deficit, and still found a way to leave with a road victory in the 2026 season opener, the kind of result that instantly resets expectations for everyone watching from the outside.

Drake Mayes three interceptions, including the late fourth-quarter mistake that effectively ended it, were the most obvious turning point, but Seattle also got a big lift from Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who finished with eight catches for 122 yards and a touchdown. For Houston, it is the sort of early-season warning worth keeping in mind: games can flip fast, and a team that feels in control one quarter can be chasing the next. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Week 1 Defensive Plan Suddenly Has A New Concern

Houstons Week 1 defensive prep picked up an unwelcome wrinkle Thursday when rookie defensive tackle Kayden McDonald sat out practice with an ankle injury. McDonald had been limited a day earlier, and now his availability for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills is up in the air as the Texans continue working through their game plan.

The timing matters because Houston has spent the week sorting out how to match up with a Buffalo offense that will test every layer of the defense. The Texans do have depth along the defensive line, but McDonalds presence would still be a useful piece if he can get back on the field before kickoff. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Guard Plan Is Putting Fresh Pressure On The New O-Line

The Texans spent part of their offseason trying to steady the interior of the offensive line, and Wyatt Teller is one of the more interesting pieces in that puzzle. Houston brought in the veteran guard on a two-year deal after his run with the Browns, where he handled right guard duties, and the move gave the team another experienced option as it worked through its protection plan.

Nick Caserio said Teller has settled into the new scheme well, and the early expectation is that he will be part of the guard depth rather than an immediate full-time starter. Even so, Houston clearly views him as a player it can lean on if needed, which adds a layer of pressure to the rest of the new-look line as training camp and the season approach. [Read more 🡒]
