The frustration around DeMeco Ryans’ defense is no longer staying inside the building. After Houston’s rough 2-5 start, the criticism is coming from opponents, former players, and anyone else watching the unit struggle to hold up.
One of the latest voices was former Texans right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, who questioned how prepared Ryans’ defense looked after the New York Giants beat Houston in overtime behind Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary. Now Steven Nelson has added his own blunt assessment, and he didn’t soften a thing.
Nelson, a nine-year veteran cornerback who spent his final two seasons in Houston from 2022-2023, addressed the situation on an episode of Will Kunkel’s Kickin’ it with Kunkel. He put some of the blame on the players themselves, especially when it comes to missed tackles and effort.
"What you can put on them [the players] is the tackling and effort. Like, the play we just saw, guys missing tackles.
They're like the worst team in tackling right now. That's inexcusable.
That's not scheme to me."
Nelson also leaned on his own experience with the Texans’ defense, saying he always tried to play with a mindset that made him hard to correct on film.
"I've never wanted to be the person on film where you have to correct me, like, because of my pride. I might give up a play here and there, but I'll mess around and get a turnover or something.
It's third and short, I'ma get up there and press, get a three-and-out. Even going back to the Colts game [week three] when they had Kamari Lassiter, I don't know why the heck he was playing off in that situation when they [the Colts] kicked the field goal [game-winner].
I would've never did no crap like that."
Kunkel followed up by asking, "So, if you were told to be 10-off [yards], you'd be like nah?" Nelson answered, "Oh yeah, that's why they probably didn't like me because I always played self-preservation."
That opinion matters because Nelson’s time in Houston was productive. Across two seasons under both Lovie Smith and Ryans, he had what was arguably his best stretch since 2018-2019, posting 115 total tackles, one sack, five interceptions and an 82-yard pick-six of Joe Flacco in the Texans’ 45-14 AFC Wildcard win over the Browns in the 2023 postseason.
The split between Nelson and the Texans was not a friendly one, and he has taken shots at the organization and its leadership before. This latest round fits that pattern, with Nelson once again making it clear he doesn’t like what he’s seeing from the Texans’ direction.

Texans Just Sent A Concerning Signal About Their Backfield
The Texans added another running back to the mix this week, claiming Emari Demercado off waivers from the Cowboys as they continue sorting through their backfield depth. It is the kind of move that usually does not grab much attention on its own, but in this case it arrives with a clear layer of concern attached to it.
Houston has not said whether David Montgomery will be back after the bye week, and the groin issue that has limited him has left the team with an unsettled outlook at the position. Bringing in Demercado gives the Texans another available option while they wait for more clarity, and it also suggests they are bracing for the possibility that Montgomery may need additional time. Texans Just Lost A Key Receiver At The Worst Time
Jaylin Noels toe injury has come at a rough stretch for Houston, and the Texans have now put the rookie receiver on injured reserve with an eye toward the rest of the regular season. Before the setback, Noel had been one of the most efficient parts of the passing game, leading the team in receiving yards and yards per catch and giving the offense a steady downfield option.
The timing makes the loss especially frustrating because Houston has been trying to keep its aerial attack balanced amid a few moving pieces. Marvin Harrison Jr. arrived in a trade, and Tank Dell is back in the mix, which should give the Texans more answers in the passing game, but replacing what Noel had been providing is still a real challenge. Texans Bye Week Draft Picture Exposes A Roster Problem Ahead
The Texans bye week has put an unusual kind of spotlight on the future, and it is not the sort of view teams usually enjoy this far out. With four selections currently lined up for the 2027 NFL Draft, including a projected fourth overall pick, the early board already hints at how much work could be waiting ahead. The discussion around possible targets has naturally started to drift toward premium positions, with a Notre Dame cornerback and a defensive tackle among the names and spots being kicked around as the roster gets evaluated.
Houston also has a separate question to sort through at running back, where depth remains part of the conversation as the team looks ahead. None of these projections are set in stone, of course, but the fact that the Texans are already being mapped against such a high-value draft slot says plenty about the way this roster is being viewed right now. For a team trying to keep building, the next wave of needs may be just as important as the current push. [Read more 🡒]
