Dan Campbell Says Texans Just Got Better Fast

Dan Campbell believes David Montgomery's move to the Texans will significantly boost their running game, as he transitions seamlessly into the role of RB1.

Houston Lands a Gem: David Montgomery Joins the Texans

In a move that could reshape the Texans' backfield, veteran running back David Montgomery is heading to Houston, bringing his powerful running style and a wealth of experience. Known for his punishing, downhill approach, Montgomery has made a name for himself as a relentless force on the field.

Despite his success with the Detroit Lions, the emergence of star runner Jahmyr Gibbs led to Montgomery's trade to the Texans. In return, the Lions received offensive guard Juice Scruggs, along with a fourth-round and seventh-round pick. As Montgomery steps into the role of Houston’s lead back, replacing Joe Mixon, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has nothing but praise for him.

“I love David Montgomery,” Campbell shared. “He’s a stud.

This trade is beneficial for both sides. It gives David the chance to be the main guy, and we got some value back.

Houston's going to love what he brings to the table.”

Montgomery’s contract was recently adjusted by the Texans, ensuring he’s well-compensated for his new role. Over the next two seasons, he’s set to earn $16.5 million, including a $6.5 million signing bonus. This year, his base salary is fully guaranteed, with additional incentives for active roster appearances.

At 28, Montgomery’s stats speak volumes about his versatility. Last season, he played every game, catching 24 passes for 192 yards. His career totals of 231 receptions for 1,890 yards and four touchdowns highlight his ability to contribute beyond just rushing.

Montgomery is eager to make an impact in Houston, expressing his excitement during his introductory press conference. “Houston was definitely the place I wanted to go,” he said.

“Playing under coach DeMeco Ryans is something I’ve looked forward to. I’m here to prove I can hang with the best.”

The Texans, who struggled in the running game last year, are counting on Montgomery to be the anchor they need. With his experience and skill set, he’s poised to elevate their offense significantly.

Joining Montgomery in the Texans’ backfield is Woody Marks, who’s thrilled about the new addition. “I’m very excited,” Marks said.

“Watching him and Gibbs was inspiring. We’re looking to bring that same energy here in Houston.”

Montgomery’s career numbers are impressive, with 6,115 rushing yards and 59 touchdowns. His time in Detroit saw him amass 2,506 yards and 33 touchdowns over three seasons. Now, he’s ready to bring that success to the Texans, hoping to revitalize their ground game, which ranked 22nd overall last season.

As the Texans gear up for the new season, Montgomery’s arrival signals a fresh start and a promising future for their running game. His presence not only adds depth but also provides a much-needed spark to a team eager to make strides in the NFL landscape.
