Cowboys Lock in Javonte Williams; Travis Etienne Eyes Kansas City
As NFL free agency looms, the Houston Texans find themselves in a tight spot, scrambling to bolster their rushing attack. With a lackluster performance last season, General Manager Nick Caserio faces the challenge of injecting new talent into the backfield. However, the pool of available running backs is rapidly shrinking.
Cowboys Secure Javonte Williams
The Dallas Cowboys have locked in running back Javonte Williams with a three-year, $24 million deal, including $16 million guaranteed. After a standout season amassing 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns, Williams is set to continue his journey in Dallas, leaving the Texans to search elsewhere.
Williams' return to Big D is significant for Houston, as he was a potential target for their roster. With him off the table, the Texans must pivot to other options to address their needs.
Travis Etienne on the Move?
Attention now turns to Jacksonville Jaguars' Travis Etienne, who will become a free agent on March 11th. Etienne, fresh off another 1,000-yard season, also contributed 13 touchdowns to the Jaguars' impressive 13-win campaign. His market value is projected around $7.5 million, but with Williams' recent contract, Etienne might seek a similar or better deal.
Adding to the intrigue, Etienne has expressed genuine interest in joining the Kansas City Chiefs, which could further complicate Houston's plans if he chooses to head there.
Texans' Remaining Options
With Williams and potentially Etienne off the board, the Texans might consider other free-agent options like Kenneth Walker III, Breece Hall, Rachaad White, and Rico Dowdle. These players could complement a backfield featuring Woody Marks and Jawhar Jordan.
Looking to the Draft
The Texans also have the NFL draft in April to consider, where they might target rookies like Jadarian Price, Jonah Coleman, and Emmett Johnson. While a rookie could fill a third-string role initially, they would have time to develop under offensive coordinator Nick Caley's system.
As free agency approaches, the Texans must navigate these challenges to revitalize their running game and set the stage for a stronger season.
