CJ Stroud gave NFL fans plenty to talk about before the Houston Texans even took the field Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The quarterback’s pregame routine didn’t look like the usual loose throws and quick footwork. In video shared by @bunch_nuts, Stroud can be seen holding his thumbs apart first horizontally and then vertically, following each one with his eyes from end to end.
He repeated the motion several times on the field, and the clip quickly took off. “Very intrigued by CJ Stroud’s warmup tonight,” the post read.
It had more than 6.3 million views at the time of writing.
Reactions came fast, and most fans were left trying to figure out what they were seeing. One wrote, “Whatever it was, he looked better.”
Another connected it to a recent moment involving an NFL broadcaster: “Looks like what Tony Romo had to go through a couple weeks ago.” A third offered a more practical explanation, saying, “This is to prevent the effects of vertigo,” before adding, “My wife’s doctor has her do the same thing after being on a boat, airplane, etc. to avoid triggering her vertigo.
We laugh about it endlessly.”
Whatever the purpose of the routine, Stroud looked sharp once the game started. He got the start in Houston’s second preseason game after sitting out the opener entirely, and he needed only one possession to make an impact. That drive ended with a touchdown, finished by Woody Marks on a 20-yard scoring run.
Stroud completed 65.7% of his passes for 187 yards, throwing a touchdown and no interceptions.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans had already made it clear he wanted a longer look at Houston’s offense, even though most defensive starters were rested. That plan also came against the backdrop of Jayden Higgins suffering a season-ending torn ACL earlier in the week, leaving the Texans thinner at receiver as the regular season approaches.
Stroud heads into 2026 with a lot on the line after back-to-back seasons that didn’t match his rookie year, a run that ended with a rough divisional-round loss to the Patriots in January. He’s already been one of the league’s most watched quarterbacks this offseason, with his physical transformation before training camp and the reaction to his arrival in July both setting off plenty of online chatter.
The vertigo theory fans floated may have some medical backing. Eye-tracking drills that move across horizontal and vertical planes are used to help the vestibular system reset after issues like air travel, motion sickness or inner-ear problems. Whether that’s what Stroud was doing is still unknown, since neither he nor the Texans has explained the video.
For now, it’s just one more odd little subplot in a Texans preseason that has already brought its share of change. Houston finishes out the preseason before opening the regular season on the road against the Bills.

Texans Just Lost A Steady Edge Rusher To An Interesting New Deal
The Browns are adding some familiar veteran pass-rush help, and for Houston it means another steady piece off the edge is gone. Derek Barnett is headed to Cleveland on a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, ending a three-year stretch with the Texans for the former first-round pick and Super Bowl champion who brought experience and dependable rotational production to Houston's front.
Barnett's departure comes at a time when the Texans have leaned on depth and continuity up front, so losing a proven edge option will be felt. Cleveland had been searching for answers after trading Myles Garrett and then losing Alex Wright to injury, which made Barnett a logical fit, but Houston now has to sort out how it replaces one of its more established veterans on the outside. Texans Suddenly Have A Tank Dell Problem Before Week 1
Tank Dells recovery has turned into one of the more important camp developments for Houston as Week 1 approaches. The Texans have kept him in limited work while he continues to rehab, but he has not been a full participant in recent practices and also sat out the final preseason game, leaving his status for the opener in serious doubt.
Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel have emerged as names to watch if Houston has to adjust on the fly opposite Nico Collins. With Dell unavailable, the Texans are left sorting through a receiver depth chart that suddenly looks less settled than it did a few weeks ago, and how they handle that spot could shape the way the offense opens the season. Texans Suddenly Have A Receiver Battle Fans Need To Watch
Jayden Higgins season-ending ACL injury forced the Texans to move quickly, and the answer came in the form of two veteran wide receivers added to the 90-man roster. Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones now enter a receiver room that needed more bodies and more experience, giving Houston a pair of proven options to sort through as training camp and the preseason unfold.
DeMeco Ryans pointed to that veteran presence as part of the appeal, with both players offering the kind of depth that can matter when roster spots are up for grabs. The bigger question now is how they look in the coming weeks, because Shepard and Jones are not just filling out camp numbers - they are competing for one of the Texans 53-man roster spots.
